_12:13 pm_[divinelybereft] Plastic additives leak out of research containers and contaminate results According to Holt, these latest findings have, "significant and far-reaching implications for the integrity of scientific work."According to rantaboutfuture, that's a huge understatement. One (being anyone with common sense) would assume that BIOLOGISTS and CHEMISTS who DESIGN RESEARCH PROJECTS would take into account ALL POSSIBLE CONTAMINANTS!The idea that there is a large percentage of research that has been tainted due to researchers obliviousness to the obvious problem of plastic contamination is abhorrent and unfortunately UNSURPRISING. _10:07 am_[divinelybereft] O brave new world that has such technology in it! Remotely controlling brain activity with ultrasound...http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/10/081029104251.htmSome excerpts:When asked about the potential of using his groups' methods to remotely control brain activity, Tyler says: "One might be able to envision potential applications ranging from medical interventions to use in video gaming or the creation of artificial memories along the lines of Arnold Schwarzenegger's character in 'Total Recall.' Imagine taking a vacation without actually going anywhere?Led by Tyler, the ASU research group discovered that remotely delivered low intensity, low frequency ultrasound (LILFU) increased the activity of voltage-gated sodium and calcium channels in a manner sufficient to trigger action potentials and the release of neurotransmitter from synapses. Since these processes are fundamental to the transfer of information among neurons, the authors pose that this type of ultrasound provides a powerful new tool for modulating the activity of neural circuits. _9:31 am_[divinelybereft] Very interesting... Magnetic Portals Connect Sun And Earth I am not sure I agree with the use of such a misinterpretable term as "portals" but this phenomenon is intriguing.http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/11/081101093713.htmI think I need to learn more about the "electric universe" theories that scientists have often disregarded. _2:23 pm_[divinelybereft] RNA Devices First 'Plug-and-play' Synthetic RNA DeviceI do not know enough about RNA to be as excited and terrified about this as I should be.If anyone has any comments about this, I would love to hear them.My immediate feeling is that this is a great tool and a great weapon. _1:50 pm_[divinelybereft] Mass Extinction more than just sensationalism "Given that we are losing species from ecosystems around the world, we need to know which species matter the most –– and which we should pour our resources into protecting."Earth In Midst Of Sixth Mass Extinction: 50% Of All Species DisappearingIt is very frightening to read something so matter of fact (despite it being a theory, technically) about the state of organisms on Earth. What is frustrating and upsetting is that this is not on the national news. This is absolutely more important than any economy, government, or human social issue. This is our existence we are messing with. This is humanity's fault. More accurately, this is rich people's (who have money and time and don't fight for change) fault. (Comment on this)

_3:18 am_[divinelybereft] Humanity's Ultimate Downfall? Using Living Cells As Nanotechnology FactoriesThis is just one article of the many that point toward a potentially terrifying ability to engineer our own micro-organic robots. The positives outweigh the negatives... but just one negative is all it would take to dramatically affect our future on this or any world. (Comment on this)
