I wish I could define (original) (raw)

This is my late entry for Awesome August for August 4th. There will be a second part posted later today (the 11th). I'll move this to my fic journal later also.
Traffic
There's a busted water main or gas line, something like that on Maple Avenue. There's road resurfacing on Carlson Boulevard so traffic has been narrowed down to two lanes there causing a minor traffic jam. Lance figures he's lived in the area long enough that he can take a different route without getting too off course and it won't take as long as it would if he'd gotten mixed up in the traffic jam. Its a good plan, he thinks as he zips along through one neighborhood after another, he just has to stop and get dinner and then hopefully get back to the house before the food is stone cold. He makes a left onto Evans Drive and spots an orange construction sign up ahead designating another detour. The restaurant isn't far, maybe three blocks away, if that. So as long as the detour doesn't route him further than that, things will be just fine.
Ten minutes later, he slides back into the car and places the bags of food on the passenger seat. Dingo and Foster try to swarm into the seat from the back of the car and Lance pushes them away. "Settle down you two. No people food for you."
He's stopped at a red light at the corner of Clarkston and Pine when JC calls wanting to know where Lance and the food is. JC jokingly accuses Lance of taking a 'scenic route' so that he can eat all the food without JC. Lance reminds him that JC was the one who selected the restaurant for the evening and how lucky he'd been that Lance was going to be passing through that area and willing to pick dinner up.
Less than fifteen minutes from JC's house the dogs decide to make an attempt at the bags of food. Lance takes his eyes off the road for just a moment while he tries to push them into the backseat once again and the next thing he knows he's hit something and the airbags deploy as the car comes to an abrupt stop. The dogs are fine, Lance has a busted lip from where the airbag hit him in the face and there's food all over the floorboard of the passenger side of the car. The front end of his car is crumpled around what remains of brick wall. With shaking hands he finds his phone where its wedged in between on the floor in the mess of spilled food and calls JC to come get the dogs so that Lance doesn't have to worry about the dogs on-top of everything else that is happening. He stares at the front of his car and thanks whoever is listening that he hadn't hit another person. JC arrives to take control of the dogs just as the police show up to the scene.
Its while dealing with the police officer that Lance discovers that he's been driving around with expired license plates. He tries not to cringe as the police officer makes a note of that fact. Then Lance can't find his copy of his insurance information in the mess that is his glove box. The cop frowns and makes another note in his notebook. Dingo has somehow managed to slip out of his collar and is running around barking at the tow truck driver and the various people that have gathered around to gawk at the accident. Another notation in the police officer's notebook. Lance watches as JC finally manages to corral Dingo without anything else happening, like Dingo biting someone. Lance thinks if that had happened it would have just been the final straw to the lousy turn the evening had taken.
.... end, for now....

I'll write a ficlet (popslash only, please) for anyone that correctly guesses what story I wrote for MTYG this year - excluding anyone that has prior knowledge of who I was writing for - or who looked my story over for me while I was writing it.
Comments screened.

Something Like August
About - For the fifth month running, we're hoping to have at least one fandom-related post made per day.
Rules - This challenge is not limited to fiction. Post anything you like: stories, wallpapers, icons, macros, fanart, whatever, as long as it's poplslash related. If you're writing fic, feel free to cross over with any fandom you choose, as long as it's pop-based - anything over 100 words or over is fine, there is no upper limit. If you're posting icons, please make it 5 or more, and again there's no upper limit.
How to play - All of August's dates are behind the cut. Comment to claim your date (or dates). When you've made your post ON your date, comment again to let us all know (and so I can make a masterlist of everything). Dates can definitely be shared if enough people sign up!
If something goes wrong (because we all know things happen on occasion) and you can't post on the day you planned, please let me know.
Any questions or comments, please ask or speak up!
And that's it. Go ahead and claim, and please pimp this challenge anywhere you can! If you'd like to snag one of the banners for the challenge, please feel free to. bellamyrose was sweet enough to make them for the challenge. :)
Masterlist of the month's offerings is found here.
Have fun!

Did you write for the Dragon challenge?
Did you receive an FB email from me?
Because I've sent email for every story (except mine) and I've since been told by more than one person that they didn't get any fb from me on their story.
I'm wondering if my email is lost in cyberspace or in someone's junk mail filter.
You don't have to identify your story. But please if you wrote a story, let me know if you got fb from me. (I've saved copies of what I sent, so I can resend it if needed)
Thanks.
Pen, I'll make this post public if you want to point towards it.
My thoughts and feelings on the stories from this years Dragon challenge (with dwarves & dolphins)
Index for the stories is here and as always, thanks go to Pen for having the challenge.
Beware of spoilers, but ( Read more...Collapse )
EDIT: If you've come to see the fic I did for the June bug challenge, allow me to redirect you to my fic journal and the finished story. Please go to read the story there. This post will disappear once Lucy changes her link.
Oh Lucy, I'm so sorry. But my completed story is going to be late. Between the storms and having someone either lurking over my shoulder or hogging the computer on me, I'm just not happy w/ what I have so far.
So rather than have nothing at all, I'm going to post the begining of it here and will add the rest tomorrow while my lurking mother is at work. lol. I'll also move it to the fic journal so everyone can see it, because that's where I prefer to keep my fic. lol.
Musings
It was unusual for the house to be so quiet that Chris could hear him talking on the phone from a room away. “At least I don’t have to search for him.” Chris thought, following the sounds.
“Yes Mom, I know you wanted to be there tonight.” A pause while his mother obviously said something, “Yes, I will remember to tell everyone that you’re sorry and that you send your love.” Another pause. “Mom, you know we really didn’t expect you to attend, it’s just suppose to be a small gathering of close friends and family.” Chris winced, he was sure that statement didn’t go over well. “Mom. Mom. Mom, I didn’t say you weren’t family, of course you’re family. Why wouldn’t you be family?”
He was pacing when Chris finally walked into the room, the phone held close to his ear. Chris crossed the room quickly and plucked the phone from his fingers, “Hi, I’m really sorry to do this, but we’re already running late and I’m going to have to drag him off to get ready. I’ll give everyone your best and we’ll expect to see you at the big party in a couple weeks. Bye.” Chris quickly disconnected the call and tossed the phone on the table.
“Chris, that was rude!”
“I’ve been telling you for years that you need to grow a spine and realize Mother or not, she’s just another person and quit letting her walk all over you.”
“I don’t let her walk all over me.”
Chris just laughed, “You do, but we don’t have time for this discussion. We really are running late.”
“What ever happened to the Chris that never cared if he was late or not.”
“I’m never late for the really important things.”

Dear MTYG Santa;
In advance I want to thank you for my story. I appreciate the work you put in on the story so much, even though as I write this you haven't written it and I haven't read it yet. :)
If you aren't on my friendslist already (and there's a chance that you are) then you might find my request a little vague.
( so let me tell you moreCollapse )

If you are planning on friending this journal, then COMMENT in this post. If I don't already know you or if we don't have a mutual friend in common, chances are I won't be adding you back unless you comment to this post.
When you comment, please tell me how you found my journal *and* why you are friending me.
I do this for the sole reason as I am tired of fake friends and people who are only interested in friending me so that I'll write stuff for them. Please understand.
THANK YOU!
