What other animal on earth denatures its food by cooking? (original) (raw)

Join me Thursday night at 6:30 pm to discuss the startup of a non-profit organic produce co-operative store. Poor people should be able to eat as much organic food as the middle class. Through efforts involving the entire community, including backyard farmers, local growers, community organizations, volunteers, and grassroots outreach to citizens, we hope to establish an organization that can provide one thing that has seemed unattainable - organic produce, so cheap that a minimum-wage single mom can afford it.

Delridge neighborhood has no supermarkets, so the residents are primed to accept a new source of food. Delridge Produce Co-op would provide not only inexpensive produce within walking distance of large parts of Delridge, but also via bus to downtown Seattle, Capitol Hill, Greenwood, White Center, Burien, and West Seattle. As a whole, Seattle has very little inexpensive organic produce. The farmers' markets are infrequent and expensive, the large chain natural food stores are expensive, and the food banks are able to supply a very small percentage of fresh organic foods to needy families. By locating a store on Delridge, we will be addressing a very real need in that neighborhood, and also supplying Seattle with the same resource within just a ten-minute bus ride of downtown.
