It is one that is marginalised, silenced and politically manipulated. This is especially the case in those countries directly involved in admitting migrants. Recently, the situation in Italy has escalated further, due to the propaganda of a new government, the exacerbation of the economic crisis and an evident socio-cultural regression.

This paper aims to discuss a specific form of fear that seems to be innate to humankind but is somehow also shaped by the cultural, social and political environment in which this private, as well as political, emotion arises. This specific form of fear is ultimately brought about the idea of the stranger or "other". Therefore, xenophobia, intended in its objective and subjective sense: is the fear of the stranger and the fear of being a stranger. This paper will address the issue in a historical fashion while maintaining a conceptual focus on the philosophical theme of identity/alterity and pointing to the contemporary relevance of xenophobia. As a first instance, in order to understand the conceptual ground from which xenophobia derives, the history and the composed etymology of the concept are traced back to Ancient Greek Culture. Secondly, it is carried out a synchronic analysis of this contemporary term and its application in contemporary socio-political context. The sense of belonging to a group, a community, an ethnicity and a nation is what determines not only the social and political identity of every human being but also the emotional perception of personal identity. The fear of perceiving oneself as a stranger can be disruptive in society as much as the fear of the differences that a stranger brings to the minds of those who already inhabit that space. The emotional effects provoked by the recognition of "the difference" put into question the concept of identity on both sides of the confrontation. Furthermore, the social representation of the identity and the internal perception of one's own identity are both triggered. Today, it is clear that xenophobia has a strong impact on political level as well as creating many effects on our private and emotional sensibilities. The relevance of this emotion will be shown by a reference to two historical phenomena (slavery and imperialism) and to two contemporary circumstances (the migrants' crisis in the Mediterranean Sea and Trump's propaganda against migration from Central America). In conclusion, this paper asserts the necessity of revaluing and including a reflection on emotions in political theory. This is elucidated by examining the ways in which a political discourse that embraces human emotions could help to challenge the social fear and anxiety which xenophobia creates. A positive emotional answer to xenophobia can be found at the cultural and historical roots of the Mediterranean tradition and it consists in recuperating the value of hospitality and the relevance of empathy into social life.

The Realm of Mimesis in Plato

They can be spontaneous or acquired. These are secondary to trauma, infection or neoplasia. Adult-onset spontaneous or idiopathic MECs are rare. Temporal bone MECs can present with watery discharge from the ear, conductive hearing loss or symptoms of meningitis like headache, fever, vomiting or seizures. These symptoms mimic chronic suppurative or serous otitis media. Computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging differentiate between them. Awareness of this disease entity is necessary for early detection to avoid complications. We report a case of bilateral idiopathic temporal bone MECs with a rare presentation of autophony as the chief complaint. The differentiating features on computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging and the surgical management are discussed.

The value of the emotions is contextualised within the frame of the human soul as conceived in the Aristotelian philosophical system and is examined by comparing it with Plato’s own conception of the soul and the Arts. This leads to a full revision of the claims by some feminist theories of Aristotelian misogyny. The paper concludes by showing how Aristotle’s assessment of the educative role of mimesis and the political role of theatre imply a positive evaluation of the relevance of emotions, especially within public life.

They are living contradictions-partly oral and partly literary. This relationship between orality and writing is one of the most vexed issues in the history of Platonic interpretation and has particular relevance for the progressive erosion of literacy in favour of digitalisation today. This book argues that the relationship between the oral and the written in Plato's dialogues is not a straightforward opposition, but is instead grounded in ontological analysis and exempli ed by the ontology of the image, which appears throughout the Platonic canon. Readership This book primarily targets academics and postgraduates in the elds of Classical Studies, Ancient Philosophy, Hermeneutics, Anthropology, and Media Studies, as well as undergraduates in humanistic faculties.
