Reading the 100 (original) (raw)

I have posted a brief review HERE at my journal. Finished this masterpiece over the weekend after having put it aside for a few weeks.

Have since also read Siddhartha, and am beginning Dangerous Liaisons before moving on to another on the list.

I thought it would be nice to be part of this community as I attempt to read through as many classics as humanly possible.

Reading now: War and Peace
One book on the list I love: Gilgamesh
One book I am looking forward to reading: Crime and Punishment

I'll update with what I've read so far at a later date.

Hi Readers,
just joined and want to confirm my interest in a subject and friend-membership))

i used to amuse myself with spanish, russian and belarusian literature (two last ones are native). partycularly - Lorca, Marquez, Neruda; Dostoevsky, Pasternak, Gogol; Karatkevich (!), Sys, Arlou. lately turned more toward science fiction which is my bf's passion.
besides that i also translate (more in a past then in present time) spanish poetry. lovers of LORCA are especially welcome:))

well going to read some more.

see u.

i´m new here.
i´m reading more at one time. now i´m reading Pijoan´s History of art, a detective stories book by Glauser, a book on Dali etc.
i love Pride and Prejudice (and Jane Austen).

Hey, we're a month in. How is everyone progressing?

I finished my first book (of this list, for this year): Beloved, and am 100 pages into the second: Middlemarch, by George Eliot. I think I was expecting too sraight-forward of a story, when I needed to just get lost in style. The characters didn't know what they were going through--so I shouldn't haved expected to understand exactly what I'm reading either.

I was wondering if anyone here had read books by Morrison, and what they thought.

Now I'm well into George Eliot's Middlemarch. I read Mill on the Floss ages ago, and while I didn't love it, it helps knowing that ahead of time that I can 'get' her style. And I am. The characters are clear in my head (good for wordy books of this era). There are some great lines in it, especially the little comments on human nature of foibles: "The mistakes that we male and female mortals make when we have our own way might fairly raise some wonder that we are so fond of it."

Book Title: The Time Travellers Wife
Author: Audrey Niffenegger
Category: Fiction

My rating of the book, F- [worst] to A [best].: A -
Short description/summary of the book: (From Amazon) It's the story of Henry and Claire, who meet when Claire is aged six and Henry in his 30s. They were married when Claire was 20 and Henry 28, which is possible because Henry can time travel.

My Thoughts: A wonderfully moving book and a description of the changing nature of love. You feel pity for Henry and Clare but then the different ages and periods that they see each other in makes for their different stages of relationship to develop in ways which a 'normal' relationship would not work. You have to suspend your own sense of reality here, but what the hell, you are reading for pleasure so you are allowed that! Thoroughly recommended.

Books read this year: 2/100. Hmm..work to do.

Next read(s): About to start 'Sophie's Choice' by Jostein Gaarder . I think this one will take a longer time to read.

Book Title: Then we came to the end
Author: Joshua Ferris
Category: Fiction

My rating of the book, F- [worst] to A [best].: A
Short description/summary of the book: This is set in an advertising agency in Chicago at a time of economic uncertainty. Staff are slowly being shown the door, but a gang of folks still gather around to gossip, either about themselves or their managers.

My Thoughts: At first I thought it was just a story about office life, which is good because it portrays it so accurately. What I did not expect is that it was something more, it relays the people beyond all the office banter and shows their idiosyncracies, their troubles and how they relate to others. It is a slow burner, but stick with it because it is such a rewarding experience, I laughed and cried reading this book (sounds extremely corny but its true). Ferris is a bloody talented writer and I am looking forward to reading more of his work. I rate the excellence of the book by how much I think about it afterwards and after finishing it I really mulled over it for a few days. Unfortunately I think that I have already found my best book of the year and this is it!

Books read this year: 1/100. I handed in my dissertation last week, so I have started this undertaking very late!

Next read(s): Currently enjoying 'The Time Travellers Wife'.

so, my new years resolution was to read more (and never watch tv if possible). I found this and i really want to see if i can finish all/ most of the books on this list by the end of the year.

- One book on the list that you love: Pride and Prejudice
- One book that should have been included on the list but was not: Les Fleurs du mal - Baudelaire
- One book that was included but should not have been: hmm
- One book you are looking forward to reading: Ulysses- James Joyce/ The Stranger- Albert Camus

( the listCollapse )

Hey everyone!..
I'm in grade 11 this year - I live in Australia so I have no idea what that converts to in America.. but anyway.
I love reading, and I always have, and last year my English teacher prodded me into reading classics, and I've found that I really, really love them! I thought this looked fun, so here is my list.

Enjoy!

I heard about this community at the same time I was finalizing my reading goal for 2009. I'm sure I won't read all 100. If I'm not getting anything out of book, I don't finish. Plus, there are a number of books I want to read that aren't on this list. But it's good to have a guide. Otherwise the goal of 'read some of the classics' is fairly useless.

Reading now: The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs
One book on the list that you love: Pride and Prejudice
One book that should have been included on the list but was not: To Kill a Mockingbird
One book that was included but should not have been: My brother asked me the other day if he should read Gulliver's Travels, and I said that you could read a number of better books that you could read in the time it took to read that. I don't think it's a bad book, and I realize it historically is important, but I am not convinced it is the best use of your reading time.
One book you are looking forward to reading: Don Quixote and the remainder of Edgar Allen Poe
( Progress on the list so far:Collapse )
