Unsurprisingly, most of them have been classified as female, while those with a shield and conic headgear have been recognised as male soldiers. This paper focuses on how these female figurines embodied the different roles assigned to women in the agricultural-based economy and religion of Archaic Cyprus. It also analyses the local economy from a gendered perspective, studying how women from a farming community faced domestic demands, complied with institutionalised religious and public roles, while providing children to secure descendance.

A new approach to the archaeological material is needed due to the multiplicity of findings in recent decades and the overcoming of traditional theories in this field of study. We have focused on the figurative monuments, as Mithraic iconography has been considered a mere vehicle for the transmission of the eschatology of the cult. Although three representations of tauroctony were located in the province of Baetica, the findings of Tróia and Mérida, both in Lusitania, are the most important source of materials in the territory of Hispania. Recent discoveries in Lugo, Altafulla, Cabrera de Mar, Puente Genil, San Juan de la Isla, Barbate, Mérida, along with the revision of the Museo Nacional de Arte Romano collection, have been a great contribution to the study of Mithraism in the Iberian Penin...

However, the role of the divine centaur Chiron as Achilles’ teacher offered another vision of these beings, especially in connection with music. This paper proposes a new interpretation of the iconographic evolution of the centaurs in association with music: as part of the heroes’ education, the Dionysian and Marine thiasos and their presence in funerary art. A progressively humanised representation of these creatures might be explained by the role of music as a civilising influence, enabling their elevation to a higher spiritual level and as a way to obtain immortality.

Taught by Apollo and Artemis in the arts of Music, there is no explicit representation of this myth in the Classical period. The first images of Chiron associated with Music are to be found in coins minted by Prusias II of Bithynia (2nd century BC), contemporary to the sculptures described by Pliny the Elder in Rome.
Young or old, centaurs are generic beings in Roman art, usually depicted playing musical instruments. Their presence in funerary context deserves special mention, where marine and terrestrial centaurs blow their instruments, preceding Dionysus and Ariadne carriage or engaging in idylls with Nereids, while the deceased is transported to the Afterlife.

Here, children have the opportunity to get familiar with the different shapes, functions and artistic techniques of Greek pottery. In order to get a better understanding of these subjects, they handle museum objects and try to discover what type of liquid they contained, their purpose, decoration, etc. However, among these artefacts, two fakes are usually included: a clay cast of a metallic rhyton (probably forged in the 19th century, in Italy) and a lekythos from the Victorian period.
This paper will focus on the importance of forgeries from a pedagogic point of view, as a didactic resource to highlight basic concepts on ancient Greek pottery, to favour the thorough visual analysis of ancient artefacts and to motivate insightful discussions. Moreover, we will address the relevance of historical forgeries in archaeological collections and their role in a museum, as well as the reinterpretation of Greek Art from present day.

At the Ure Museum, Key Stage 2 students (7-11 years old) children have the opportunity to handle artefacts and analyse the material, shape, function, decoration, etc. from Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece. The introduction of 3D modelling and 3D printing during the school sessions, however, has proven to open a new line of experiential learning dynamic, allowing the audience to interact with the artefacts of our collection that are too fragile to be handled. This paper will focus on the importance of new technologies from a pedagogic point of view, as a didactic resource that allows and motivate insightful discussions.
