We used an analytic tool that allows calculation of HCO − 3 delivery during hemodialysis and the physiological response to it in 17 Japanese outpatients with an average pre-dialysis blood [HCO − 3 ] of 25 mEq/L. Our analysis demonstrates that HCO − 3 addition is markedly reduced and that all of it comes from acetate metabolism. The HCO − 3 added to the extracellular fluid during treatment (19.5 mEq) was completely consumed by H+ mobilization from body buffers. In contrast to patients dialyzing with higher bath [HCO − 3 ] values in the US and Europe, organic acid production was suppressed rather than stimulated. Dietary analysis indicates that these patients are in acid balance due to the alkaline nature of their diet. In a larger group of patients using the same bath solution, pre-dialysis blood [HCO − 3 ] was lower, 22.2 mEq/L, but still in an acceptable range. Our studies indicate that a low bath [HCO − 3 ] is well tolerated and can prevent stimulation of organic acid production.

To gain insight into this mystery, we developed a model that allows a quantitative analysis of the patient's response to rapid alkalinization during hemodialysis. Our model is unique in that it is based on the distribution of bicarbonate in the extracellular fluid and assesses its removal from this compartment by mobilization of protons (H ) from buffers and other sources. The model was used to analyze the pattern of rise in blood bicarbonate concentration ([HCO ]), calculated from measurements of pH and PCO , in patients receiving standard bicarbonate hemodialysis. Model analysis demonstrated two striking findings: (1) 35% of the bicarbonate added during hemodialysis was due to influx and metabolism of acetate, despite its low concentration in the bath solution, because of the rapidly collapsing gradient for bicarbonate i...

A study sought to determine whether the "Achieve" reading curriculum is an effective instructional methodology for increasing the reading achievement of seventh-grade students with learning disabilities. If the curriculum is effective, a new way of viewing reading instruction for students with learning disabilities will result. With this new paradigm, the student with learning disabilities will be provided an opportunity to succeed in reading. The specific research question was whether the "Achieve" reading curriculum will increase the reading achievement in a selected seventh-grade special education classroom (n.10) in a Louisiana middle school. Concept/theory based sampling was used. The classroom was observed and interviews were conducted, and qualitative content analysis was conducted to determine if certain patterns or themes were recurring in the data. Data analysis yielded six recurring patterns/themes. Findings suggest that this curriculum increased the reading achievement of middle school students with learning disabilities in one Louisiana classroom. The six themes show why such a conclusion can be reached. The Achieve Reading Curriculum is appended. (Contains 48 references.) Constructivism asserts that human beings develop concepts through their own intellectual interactions and actions with the world. In whole language reading classrooms acceptance of learners means that the whole language reading teachers develop the classroom environment and the curriculum for and with the students, to meet their needs and excite them in learning about what interests them, as well as covering curriculum guidelines. The instruction received by students with learning disabilities (LD) often takes place in the resource room. Little attention is paid to the individual needs of the students with learning disabilities despite the legal requirement to do so. This paper, a literature review, addresses two areas pertaining to the development of reading ability. First, the paper investigates the development of reading ability in whole language classrooms. Then, it explores the development of reading ability in students with learning disabilities, including motivating an LD middle school student to read. It also discusses middle school student needs and preferences in reading. Contains 48 references. (NKA)

The developments that have taken place at the university and higher technical levels since 1947 have been outstanding, and this has been mainly a result of the fact that national economic planning, from the beginning, has called for a special effort by these branches. It naturally follows that expansion on such a scale has produced its own problems, many of which have arisen since the University Commission and the Sarkar Committee presented their reports. Credit must be given to two All-India bodies, the University Grants Commission and the All India Council for Technical Education, for their success in persuading both State Governments and university authorities to accept not only their advice but also their assistance in the more concrete form of financial aid. The Central Advisory Board of Education also continues to provide a valuable forum for the discussion and investigation of educational issues on a national basis and it now has—and this is true of the whole educational system—an ally in the form of the National Council of Educational Research and Training, which is equipped to supply expert guidance with regard to any issue that may be submitted to it. Despite the services rendered by these and the other advisory bodies set up since 1947, a number of problems remain to be solved.

In contrast to the predictions of the expatriate literature, we found that the majority of top managers in our sample had substantial international/Mexican experience and good Spanish skills. Our findings indicate that US expatriates have become more adept at interacting with people from other countries and cultures and that they no longer fit the incompetent internationalist stereotype.

Early stage technologies emerging from university labs represent an important source of innovation for technology firms in the United States (US), especially those located in close proximity to elite universities in regions characterized by high levels of entrepreneurial dynamism. Based in part on the U.S. demonstration effect, policymakers in the developing world increasingly view universities as institutions capable of accelerating technology-based economic development. In this article we examine the efforts of elite universities in Chile, Mexico, and Brazil to transfer faculty inventions to the marketplace. On average these institutions have upgraded commercialization infrastructure since the mid-2000s and a select few are beginning to generate significant licensing revenue and viable spinoffs. We conclude with policy recommendations and suggestions for future research.

We test to determine if firms that have implemented any or all parts of the integrated manufacturing model (defined as the use of advanced manufacturing technology, just in time inventory practices, and total quality management) are more likely to make significant skill development contributions than firms that do not use these practices. Our primary finding is that TNCs with intensive total quality management practices tend to make above average contributions. We found no significant statistical relationship between advanced manufacturing technology and skill development.

Mexican policy makers frequently state Chinese competition is forcing maquiladoras to exit low-tech, labor intensive industries and evolve towards higher value added, technology intensive sectors. In this study we determine if post China/WTO maquiladoras conform to the predictions of the Mexican government. To do this we collected information through top management interviews and plant tours at 36 startup, rapidly expanding, and premier EPZ producers in Reynosa, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. We find sample firms have uniformly adopted proximity dependent strategies. The capital intensity, technology intensity, and skill development activities of proximity dependent maquiladoras varies from low to very high. We conclude with policy implications for Mexico as well as other countries facing competition from Chinese EPZ producers in international markets.

While NAFTA has generated considerable interest, much of the initial enthusiasm for the treaty has faded due to the Mexican financial crisis. To learn more about the effects of NAFTA and the crisis on multinational (MNC) strategy and operations, we conducted interviews at manufacturing firms in Mexico. We conclude with a discussion of the implications of this study for the effective management of MNC firms in Mexico.
