Bitcoin, Bathhouses, and the Future of Energy (original) (raw)

November 27, 2023 @ 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm

Critics of bitcoin say it’s a massive waste of energy, with The New York Times earlier this year accusing bitcoin miners of causing “immense pollution.”

But what if this growing industry is actually the key to making clean energy profitable?

A new Reason documentary explores the ways that bitcoin mining is already changing the way businesses and governments use and think about energy: A spa in Brooklyn recycles the heat from miners to warm its pools. A major utility provider in Texas counts on miners to stabilize its electric grid. A small town partners with a bitcoin miner to bring down electricity costs for its residents.

Join Reason’s Nick Gillespie for a viewing of the 30-minute documentary, followed by a live discussion with Reason’s Zach Weismueller, Human Rights Foundation’s Alex Gladstein, Pubkey’s Thomas Pacchia, and Jason Goodman the owner of a Bitcoin-heated bathhouse in Brooklyn, about Bitcoin, bathhouses, and the future of energy. Then join us for an informal afterparty at PubKey, New York’s premiere bitcoin bar.

This event will be recorded for future use.

Ticket price includes light appetizers and access to a cash bar. Smoking allowed in backyard area.
