_10:14 am_[taro_twist] Just remembered this comm existed *sheepish grin* and just in time, because here is a series (well ... I am greedily hoping it becomes a series =P) that must be spread to the ends of fandom and beyond so that everyone can be as happy as I am now that I have finally caught up on it! XDBallroom Blitz and Sodium Thiopental are two connected fics by vigilante_wake that are set on Earth-11, aka the DCU's gender-switched Earth. Clark Kent is Clara Kent, Bruce Wayne is Helena Wayne, Lois Lane is Louis Lane ... yeah, you get the idea. :) "Ballroom Blitz" involves (what seems to be) Superwoman and Batwoman's first team up when Captain Nazi attacks a charity ball they both happen to be at. It's billed as a Clara/Helena fic, but it reads as being gen, with Clara and Helena's partnership/friendship just starting, and Clara doing some subtle crushing on Louis. Also? It is HILARIOUS! vigilante_wake rocks at writing humor like no one's business—her jokes are always witty and inventive and delivered with an impeccable sense of timing—and this fic is a prime example of that. You will literally be laughing out loud.Aside from that, it is an illegal amount of fun to see nearly the entire DCU get gender-bent. Clara is adorable, Helena is priceless (both as Batwoman and the Paris Hilton-esque Princess of Gotham), Louis ... has the hottest tuxedo I've ever heard of, lol. And along with them we get to see Patty White, a cross-dressing Jenny Olsen, Olivia Queen, Rory Harper, a wig-wearing Lexi Luthor, Teresa Kord ... and Ace, the Bat-chihuahua! vigilante_wake did a fantastic job of keeping everyone's personalities intact, and to (even more =P) great comedic effect (especially in Ollie's case!).As for "Sodium Thiopental", it's a deleted scene from "Ballroom Blitz" that focuses on Clara/Louis (with a brief but memorable mention of Lexi ^-^). Lexi drugs Louis with truth serum to get information out of him. Superwoman rescues him, and this ficlet is what I guess you could call the aftermath of that. :) It's short but definitely sweet, with a wonderfully understated current of romance running through it. Any Clois fans who are looking for a new take on "the reveal" should make sure to check it out. :D (Comment on this)

_6:38 pm_[galamb_borong] This community needs more love. One of the fics I've often found myself mentioning as an example of a crack pairing that works well is a fic by sionnain: The Unquiet Affair of Rachel Grey and Nathaniel Essex The plot summary by the author - "In order to save her family and friends from Sinister's machinations, Rachel Grey decides to do something daring and agrees to stay with him for a month's time, in the hopes he'll finally leave her and her family alone for good." - gives you an idea of what it's about, but really, this fic is what I'd call a "character study" in the best way possible. The interactions between the characters slowly reveal different aspects of themselves, and with remarkably little overt action the plot carries on a pace, with a conclusion that's both suitably ambiguous - with such a pairing, there's no way for it not to be - and satisfying. Also, there is definitely a kink element in this fic if you're into that, but I don't think you have to be into that to enjoy it. (Comment on this)

_12:43 pm_[jij] DC Universe Rec: "Heat" (Piper & Trickster) Thanks to "Countdown," Piper-Trickster is a new and interesting combo to write in the DCU. "Heat," by greenygal and blinkytreefrog, is a 7-part series that has slashy tones but stays gen, with a lot of focus on some very, very intense and good hurt/comfort sequences. They do "raving delerium" especially nicely. This is a great "buddy series" and I loved it! (Comment on this)

_9:47 pm_[jij] DC Universe Rec: "Necessary Force" "Necessary Force" is technically a WIP, but I know it's finished, so the more encouragement the author has to post it soon the better![](https://l-stat.livejournal.net/img/userinfo_v8.svg?v=17080&v=818)paxwolf is one of my favorite writers, and this series is set during the Waid/Morrison JLA run and evokes it uncannily--I swear, I feel like I'm reading a lost TPB that's just been published. She writes action scenes and group interactions like no one I know, right down to fantastic depictions of Aquaman and Plastic Man--not exactly characters most people take the time and effort to get tone-perfect. It's gen with slashy undertones, but nothing more than you can find in canon (and I mean Waid and Loeb-style canon, not Devin Grayson).I love this series very much and urge you all to give it a look. _12:12 pm_[jij] DC Universe Rec: "Ms. Edison's Day Out" dcdailylife is a comm dedicated to writing realistic versions of the author as a character in the DCU. I recommend the whole comm--the stories range from hysterical to quite moving. This is one of the hysterical ones.Title: Ms. Edison's Day Out Author: medieWord Count: 1731Basically a day in the life of the hapless Canadian woman hired to be a young Dick Grayson's nanny. Self-deprecating humor and deft character touches for both Bruce and Dick make this a great read. (Comment on this)

_2:30 pm_[dytabytes] Harry Potter Rec: A Mary-Sue Alphabet So, ever read an HP Mary-Sue fic? Oh, c'mon, I'm sure you have. At least two thirds of all the HP fic out there is Sue fic. It's a plague that's almost impossible to avoid. That said, if you've actually never come face-to-face with a Sue fic... you won't find this little ditty nearly as comical, because, you see, it's A Mary-Sue Alphabet. That's right, twenty six different Mary-Sue themes in twenty-six little picture-book style poems and oh how I laughed and laughed when I read them.As a snippet, here's the "A".A's for AmandaOur hero's twin sisterGot lost as a babyAnd gosh, how he missed herHe always suspectedHe had a half lackingHe set off to find herBy magical trackingSo now they're togetherAnd smiling a lotToo bad that the story'sGot no trace of plot (Comment on this)

_12:50 am_[rann] These fics are by a friend of mine, but this isn't favoritism, they're quite good. They're based in the Teen Titans toonverse, and the characterization is pretty much spot on. It manages to go into more depth and tackle subject matter that the series doesn't without sacrificing the tone or feel of the characters. In A Decent Proposal, Starfire talks to Robin about taking their relationship to the next level. It's a frank discussion of how much they care for each other and what that means, and it's both down-to-earth and quite romantic. There's nothing explicit (the characters are allowed to have their privacy, as it were), and it's just... very good, very heartwarming. (Oh, I suppose I should mention there's some mention of Raven/Beast Boy, just for the shipping completionists.)There's already a sequel, A Decent Proposal: The Morning After. Everything doesn't immediately just sort itself out into roses and sunshine... Robin and Star have some speedbumps to go over due to who they are and the differences in how they think. Again, it's a very heartfelt fic, but there's some prime comedy here, especially when Robin goes seeking romantic advice. (Yes, he does call on you-know-who.) (Comment on this)

_1:18 pm_[jij] DC Universe Rec: Tarnished Title: TarnishedAuthor: ladybugkayPairing: Dick/TimRating: PG-13Word Count: 411This is a short piece that's an interesting look at the dynamics between the two characters--they're very different people despite their shared Robin training, so what drives them to come together and how does that work? Well, like that, but not as clunky as my description. Also, it's hot. (Comment on this)

_1:05 pm_[jij] DC Universe Rec: Biopsychology Fandom: DC Universe Author: ljs_ljTitle: Biopsychology Character(s): Clark Kent/Lois Lane, Martha KentRating: G**-----------------------I usually write Clark Kent as basically a human being with superpowers, I admit it. Part of that is because most fics I see that treat him as an alien tend to make him creepy and scary, two things I could never see Superman being. This story is definitely an exception--Kal-El is distinctly alien, struggling with an unbreachable gap between Kryptonians and humans, and yet never comes off as anything other than the canon Superman--loving, humane, and kind. It's a beautiful story about transcending our upbringings and becoming full adults, and itworks on both the alien and the very human level. (2 Comments |Comment on this)

_8:51 pm_[jij] Original Fic Rec: Time Flies Title: Time FliesAuthor: Sara LaKali (sara_lakali)Word Count: 100Rating: G (All Ages)This is an odd one, but worth a look: a superhero-themed original drabble. It's delicate and evocative, a snippet that's close to poetry but has its own unique voice. The author still has a tiny friends list and I'm the only person who commented on this, which is a shame...I hope you'll go encourage her to write more in the genre! (5 Comments |Comment on this)

_5:34 pm_[dytabytes] Haha. Ostensibly, I was supposed to start posting here ages ago, but I suppose life got in the way. Who knew it would be such an involving task to move into a new place? Anyhow, I've got a pretty wide spread of fandoms, so I suppose I'll leave Marvel and DC to the more experienced. Instead, I'll try to cover everything else... slowly.Title: SerenadeFandom: NarutoAuthor: kimi_no_vanillaCharacters: Nara Shikamaru-centricRating: PG-13 maybe?Ostensibly Naruto is an anime made for young children. As such, canon doesn't really delve into the fact that, yes, this is a society where 12-year olds are expected to become soldiers and maybe that's not such a good idea? This fic focusses on Shikamaru, one of the 'side characters' of the series. It's short, but satisfying and I think it does a good job of fleshing out a possible future. It's certainly dark enough to give me shivers if I read it after sunset. Shikamaru went home that night, washed his hands about twelve times, and assured himself he wasn't developing a neurosis. So much for his normal life. (Comment on this)

_8:49 pm_[glemsydoodles] Silmarillion/Discworld crossover: Evidence "So what does he do but come looking for me, nice and safe and polishing the family heirlooms at home in a different world entirely, and say 'oo, help me, Mr. Samuel Vimes, I'm in need of a policeman and no mistake'."As bizarre as the fandoms may seem together, this works surprisingly well. In short, Sam Vimes investigates the disappearance of the Silmarils, much to the chagrin of...virtually everyone else. Camwyn gives a distinctly Discworld flavor to Tolkien's characters, fitting well with the way Pratchett likes to knock down other epic tales. As with all such stories, sometimes The Silmarillion just needs a hefty dose of common sense. (1 Comment |Comment on this)

_10:44 am_[jij] DC Universe (Wildstorm) rec: Gods and Monsters Author: loqiaTitle: Gods and MonstersPairing: Apollo/MidnighterRating: AdultYou don't need to have read The Authority to appreciate the amazingness that is this story. The very basics that you need to know: Apollo. Midnighter. Imagine Superman and Batman, stripped of Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne and turned into killing machines, while still remaining basically decent and interesting beings. Oh, and canonically in love with each other. That's really all you need to get this story, which is truly a thing of exquisite beauty: filled with introspection, angst, hot hot sex, and quiet loveliness. Please, please read it.The Authority is a Wildstorm title, which like Vertigo is DC, but not. It probably fits best under a DC rec, however. (Comment on this)

_12:22 pm_[saavikam77] It's been so quiet in here! O_O Guess I'd better come up with some recs! :pTitle: A Place to Call Home Author: NouxRating: up to R for violence and sexual situationsLength: epic - 35 chapters and counting - the story is still in progress, but is beginning to wrap up toward the climaxFollowing the events of Superman Returns, this story takes the idea that Clark was hurt worse by his encounter with Luthor and New Krypton than anyone thought. He's falling apart emotionally, and has a hard time dealing with Lois, who decides to stay with Richard rather than try to pick up where she and Superman left off.The author introduces an OC, Aileen Rogers, another reporter for the Daily Planet. She and Clark become very good friends. Note: Aileen *is not* a Mary Sue, though a very tangible chemistry develops between her and Clark. She becomes an anchor for Clark when everything else seems to be falling apart in his world.Appearances are also made by Bruce Wayne, Alfred Pennyworth, and Lucius Fox from Batman Begins, as the Gotham crew try their damnedest to try to help Clark.I won't say anything more about the plot, lest I give too much away. ^_~ This story is extremely well written, and explores a very vulnerable Clark who seems to be in way over his head when it's discovered that New Krypton might explode, still in orbit around Earth! The author is also a fantastic artist, and has done beautiful illustrations for almost every chapter. You won't want to miss those. This story was also nominated for several Superman Movieverse Fanfiction Awards, including best original character, for Aileen Rogers. Happy reading!! ^_^ Current Mood: chipper (2 Comments |Comment on this)

_3:27 pm_[museofspeed] WTFBBQ - At the Confessional, or This Is A Title In Progress.wildebrian has written what is perhaps the oddest fic I've ever read.Really, the title says it all. It's a Harry/Draco AU where Harry runs a club and Draco is an ice skater. It's very, very odd in the best way, and absolutely hilarious. It's a work in progress, but the part that's up stands up well on its own. (Comment on this)
_5:33 pm_[jij] DC universe rec: Predator Fandom: DC Universe Author: taro_twistTitle: PredatorCharacter(s): Clark KentRating: PGWord Count: 100**-------------**A well-written drabble is always amazing to me, and this is one of my favorites. It looks at a young Clark Kent just as his powers are starting to develop, and touches delicately on his possible reaction. It comes to my mind often when I think of a younger version of Clark. _12:16 am_[rann] DC universe rec: Open Windows While this is a rec for the community's creator, it's not a kissup... it really is honestly one of the best fics I've read in awhile.Open Windows is a continuation of a little series Teh No has been doing of Scott and Big Barda, set on Apokolips before they became a couple. These are quite honestly some of the best fanfics I've ever read, despite being fairly short and seemingly frivolous. But the Apokolips portrayed in these is simultaneously oppressive and hilarious... the evil and darkness has been taken to a place where you can't help but snicker at it, like some cheesy old Republic serial with a villain whose entire acting premise was "Why have drama when you can have melodrama?"So they're hilarious. At the same time, a real sense of the darkness these people are surviving in comes through. And at the same time, they're uplifting because as silly and harsh as they are, there's a lot that's touching and sweet. Any one of them is capable of turning a fairly lame night into a pretty good one, but the latest gets props for the whole thing with the guards. (Comment on this)

_1:32 pm_[jij] DC Universe rec: Letiche Fandom: DC UniverseAuthor: arch_schattenTitle: LeticheCharacters: Waylon Jones aka Killer Croc, Swamp ThingRating: GWord Count: 528_We swim and we lay down under the Sun, we mate and we die and return to the Swamp. We know not how to wish for more, when we are one with our brothers and one with the Swamp, we know no confusion or pain. We sing for our brother all the praises we know, we share with him the contentment of the Swamp._ My first rec is a beautiful story about a character who's rarely used as anything but comic relief (generally for good reason): Killer Croc. It's based on a reference in the comics to a time when Killer Croc was given sanctuary in Swamp Thing's swamp and is from the POV of a chorus of crocodiles. It's a thoughtful, eerily lovely meditation on human nature and animal nature by one of my favorite authors. (3 Comments |Comment on this)

_12:32 pm_[htbthomas] Marvel rec: The Shocker: Legit ETA: The link has been taken down. :(_I am The Shocker, and recently numbers have become very important to me; I just turned 35. I’ve held, in my entire life, two legitimate jobs, and they were both at separate Burger Kings. This was before I started safe-cracking. This was before I invented the gauntlets.I have had ribs broken twelve times. My left arm has been broken twice, and my right arm has been broken once. I broke both legs and permanently damaged my left knee after getting kicked off a building by Daredevil. I have the honor of being able to tell other villains that Captain America himself nailed me in the chest with a straight right that cracked my sternum in half. I couldn’t breathe right for the better part of two years.Today is an important day for me. Today I’m not going to jail.I’m unmarried, I haven’t had a girlfriend in over eight years, and the escort service no longer returns my calls. I have only one close friend, and I think he might be a little retarded. His name is Aleksei, but everybody but me calls him Rhino. He and I have something in common: we’re both what you would call “second string.” The second string isn’t so much a tangible thing as it is a concept. Guys like Spider-Man, Iron Man, Dare Devil and Thor, they’ve got what’re known as “rogue’s galleries.” Early in their careers, they bump into a criminal, usually super-powered, and that criminal, for better or worse, becomes a recurring clown in the media circuses that are their lives.Of course everybody knows the big names, the clown acts that really stay with you: Green Goblin. Bull’s-Eye. Carnage. The Red-Fucking-Skull. These are seriously crazy dudes, and that’s why people remember them. The Goblin claims to not only have killed Spider-Man’s girlfriend, but also to:Know his secret identityHave killed his cloneHave buried both him and his aunt alive at two separate junctures, and I like this next one best of all,Be his fatherAnd I believe all of them but the last one. Osborn is a crazy son of a bitch._--The Shocker: Legit by Max LandisI have often recommended this privately, and at various LJs, but it's time to make a generalized recommendation. The story is posted in the Spider-Man section of the Pit, but it's really a fantastic, action-packed, satire-filled epic story set in the greater Marvel U. You'll learn more about all the second, third, fourth-tier villians and characters in the 616 than you'll ever imagine. One of the top Marvel fics ever. And does the author's name ring a bell? Yes, he's the son of director Jonathan Landis. But he's by no means a BNF, so I feel that reccing this story is justified.Warning: incredibly profane, graphic (think a Sopranos vibe)... but intricately plotted, perfectly characterized and a kick-ass roller-coaster ride. _3:53 pm_[saavikam77] Superman Returns Rec: Sapphires, Crimson, and Rain Sapphires, Crimson, and RainThought I'd start with a light offering that most definitely needs more love. Lady Gwenevere Smith's "Sapphires, Crimson, and Rain" is a four part series set post-Superman Returns, told from the unusual POV of second person. That's right, YOU! In the story, you (this is assuming the reader is female! :p) are a reporter for the Daily Planet, who falls hard for the wonderfully dorky office nerd, Clark Kent, seeing him for the amazing guy he is. You also see how horribly Lois treats him. You and Clark develop a friendship that grows into something more as time goes by and Lois fades from the picture somewhat. The descriptive language in this fic is just beautiful, and believe me, you will have a whole new appreciation for the taste of peppermint after reading this. ^_~This is definitely the ultimate "Mary Sue" fic, and fairly anti-Clark/Lois. Consider yourselves warned! :p Happy reading!!EDIT: Can't seem to get the tags to work. O_o It should have 'fandom: superman returns', and 'rec: saavikam77'. *sigh* (2 Comments |Comment on this)
