Remus Dreams (original) (raw)

Harry Potter and Hedwig, having a happy moment.

I like how the highlights in his hair and his right hand came out. Hedwig looks pretty good to me, too.

So I'm finally drawing a panel with Harry, Ron, and Hermione in it, and I can't find my copy of Prisoner of Azkaban, so I can't read to find out what they were wearing during the dementor-on-the-train scene? Anybody have it? JKR doesn't always describe their outfits, though, so maybe there's nothing there, which would be why I can't remember what they're supposed to be wearing despite having read that chapter abuot 20 times. Any ideas? I'm open to suggestions.

Dishevelled and fatigued, yes, but awake, and in possession of chocolate: Remus Lupin.

I was going to embed it here, but it doesn't shrink well.

So here's the updated banner and matching buttons:

They look a little washed out. Not sure why. But I'm also not sure I don't like it. Probably I will tweak "principium" and "praeter" so the type is darker, but probably that will be it.

Panels are still in progress. I want to get a few more in the can before I start posting.

So I made those alterations to the ticket banner, but it wound up looking really busy and overdone. So I'm going to leave it. My rationale is that the ticket probably wouldn't be all that worn, as Lupin will have gotten it before getting on the train. Maybe Lupin fidgeted with it nervously before getting on the train, which is why the color is a little worn. And the type is messed up because seriosuly what non-muggle is going to bother figuring out the mechanics of a ticket machine? Okay, Mr. Weasley, yes, but apart from him? Anyway, it should look careworn, but not necessarily antique.

The first/prev/next/last buttons are going to be on the same blue as the ticket, but I can't decide between using that scuffed up victorian circus font and using a combination of grungy typewriter fonts. I'll just have to mess around and see what resonates.

I may also make a tile out of that blue ticket texture, to run in the background. I don't know, though, Joey's code apparently isn't thrilled about backgrounds. We'll see.

Still drawing the panels in pencil. They are coming out awesome. My dad is a train buff and the exterior and interior shots have safely passed under his critical eye. I'll get a few more panels in the can before I start posting them. I was thinking I would start posting the pencils, just to get them up. Then ink each panel and post those as I go, then do colors and post those, winding up with a fully colored comic. So there will be that craft aspect in addtion to the actual story, and hopefully people will be into that too.

And of course I have to wrap up the next page for Knights in time for Monday. If anyone is wondering why Knights doesn't get the same attention, it is because I know one day I'm going to want to rewrite and redraw the entire prologue, and several of the pages. Like, if it was going to have grey and screentone added, some of the panels won't work the way they are drawn. Same thing if it were going to be in color. I've known this from the very beginning.

But I want Remus Dreams to be a "one and done." I want it to be good, and I don't want to feel like I have to go back in and change or fix anything later. And if JKR ever saw it, I'd hope she's see that I'd enjoy and resepct her characters, and appreciate her hard work. And I'm learning already from the different approach I'm taking to making this comic, which will inevitably benefit the rest of my comics efforts, especially Knights.

Thanks for the feedback about the ticket. I do still like it. I think I want to add a small hole somewhere, such as might be made by a ticket punch thing, and do a couple little things to make it look a little more banged up, like maybe some buff colored wear in a couple spots on the edges, and maybe around the site of the ticket punch.

I still have to do buttons for first, previous, next, and last. I think I'll use latin, just to crack them out of the norm. I don't know latin, so maybe I've chosen the wrong words, but I want to use principium (beginning), primoris (before), praeter (after), and finitio (conclusion). I'll do them in the same blue, in those grungy typewriter fonts, or maybe in the more floral font I used for the title.

Been working on this this evening, and wanted to show it. Here's the train ticket themed banner/button for Remus Dreams:

Does that work? I think it does, I think it came out well, but I'm bleary-eyed and tired, and have been looking at it for too long to tell.

I wanted to do something different (at least, for me) for the banners and buttons for this comic, so I thought I'd base the design on old train tickets and so on. I found a couple good ones thanks to google, so I've got my starting point. I'll have to have the buttons ready for the setup stage, before I can start posting the actual panels. But I'll post them here before they go up on wcn.

It dawned on me that the last book is coming out in a few months, so I'd probably better hurry up and finish this thing. So I was just messing around, trying to get the groove. Some anatomy issues and so on, but I was having fun so I just went with it.

Next I have to do some research on the train station in the novels, and on steam engines that might serve as reference for the Hogwart's Express, then the interior of a passenger car, and then I'm good to go for about the first third of the comic.

Don't mistake my lack of posting new stuff here for a lack of or loss of love for my Remus Dreams project! This is still near to my heart, but I can't get it off the backburner just yet.

I sketched out the Shrieking Shack today, prior to its fall into ruin:

Just a cute little victorian kind of home. Aw, look... somebody's home! Doesn't it seem inviting? I think I smell baking bread! Let's go!

Also, have a Lupin:

I think that's the final for him. Or at least for his face. It's very close to my mental image of Lupin, and it is time to move on from designing his face or I will NEVER start this thing in earnest.

And I added a little more to the end of the scroll, too, but I'm cutting it because it is huge: ( Lupin floats past the whomping willowCollapse )

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince has gotten my HP fan juices flowing, so I'll probably take pot shots at some of the panels, or maybe add some thumbnails to the end of the scroll soon.

Made some Lupin icons, chopped from a pic spinooti unearthed for Camera Obscura.

Feel free to use 'em if you want. Just remember where you got 'em :)

Came across this site today. She sculpts and draws monsters. One of the sculpts featured on this page is a werewolf, and I think she really nailed what our sketches showed we've been trying (with some success) to get at for Lupin's werewolf form.

I'd be interested in getting people's opinions of the movie version of Lupin. His costume, Thewlis' performance, his werewolf form, etc, etc. I still haven't seen the film (!!), but don't worry about spoilers or anything like that.

I stitched the vertically scrolling thumbnail sheets together. I think this is about 1/4 to 1/3 the total height of the scroll. I don't know, the dream stuff just has to flow, so who knows how long it will get?

The next thing to appear in the strip is the whomping willow. Which I just can't seem to get right. Every time I draw it, it just doesn't click. Got any sketchies of the whomping willow lying around? I did peep at Mary Grandpre's versions from the books, and I think she pretty much nailed it. I was looking for a screencap from the HP:CoS movie, but couldn't find any, and my memory of the film is dusty.

Anyways, here's the scroll so far: ( cut for obscenely eeevil friends-page killing potentialCollapse )
