Such motifs appeared in the Neolithic of northeastern Iran, known as Chakhmaq Culture, as early as the early sixth millennium BCE. During a stratigraphic excavation at a Neolithic site, dated to ca. 7000–5000 BCE, in the Shahroud Plain of northeastern Iran, a body sherd was found depicting a scene of mating goats rotating around the vessel. Regarding its early date, ca. 5650–5550 cal BCE, and its naturalistic way of representing the animal motifs, this sherd is unique among the contemporaneous Neolithic sites of the Iranian Plateau.

Beyond this region, however, in the foothills of the Alborz Mountains of north-eastern Iran, evidence has emerged that charts the Neolithic transition over a period of 1500 years. Investigations at the twin mounds of Tappeh Sang-e Chakhmaq have revealed pre-pottery and pottery Neolithic occupation in a sequence long enough to document the evolving exploitation of plants and animals leading to the development of a permanent, agro-pastoral community during the eighth to sixth millennia BC. The continuous occupation of this settlement during this crucial transition allows significant changes in lifestyle to be mapped, and provides a new framework for the earliest Neolithic occupation of Iran.

This survey was part of a larger landscape survey of the Shahroud Region, to assess the potential of the area concerning ancient mines and related sites. Totally, we surveyed 270 mines and 41 slag sites, which are concentrated in areas of Torud, Reshm, Kouh Zar, Zardabie and Raze va Shesh. The surveyed mines include copper, lead, zinc, iron, gold, and turquoise deposits, some of them located as high as 2300 m above sea level. According to mining techniques and surface finds, it seems that most of the surveyed mines belong to the historical and Islamic periods, but there are indications that suggest a prehistoric date for some of the mines in Kouh-e Baba Ahmad, north of Reshm village, and Chah Messi near Torud village. Among the surveyed mining area, Reshm has surprisingly remained untouched, with several evidences of different types of mining activities, ...

Near Eastern Archaeology, 2021

area in northeast Iran, evidence of two transition periods in
the Neolithic sequence of the region were observed and partially
documented. The first transition, around 6700–6200 BCE, corresponds
with the temporal gap between the West Mound and
the East Mound of Sang-e Chakhmaq sequences, as the type sites
of the Aceramic/Proto-Ceramic Neolithic and the Ceramic Neolithic
of the northeastern Iran, respectively. The second transition
demonstrates the contextual relationship between the ceramic of
the final phase of Chakhmaq culture and the first manifestation
of distinct ceramic of the succeeding culture of Cheshmeh Ali
in the second half of the sixth millennium BCE. This is the first
time that evidence of these two transitions, augmented by new
14C dates, has been documented.

Provenience studies have been conducted on seven pieces of obsidian artefacts, recovered from the 2009 sounding of the site. The analyses of the obsidian artifacts were done by Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). The results show that all
samples were extracted from Bingöl B and Bingöl A outcrops in west of the Lake Van, eastern Anatolia. The West Mound samples have important implication for the spread of the Neolithic from Zagros eastwards during the 8th millennium BCE or earlier.
