_6:47 pm_[glambam] | Last Chance to See Has anyone read "Last Chance to See"?I was aware that Adams had done some traveling in Madagascar to write about Lemurs but I had no idea he had written an entire book about traveling around the world in search for endangered species. This is a dream come true for a zoology major/Douglas Adams fan.I'm only 40 or so pages in and it's funny and it's interesting and it's non-fiction.Everyone should read it. _11:16 am_[cargile24] | This was actually in a Real Science Magazine.... Discover Magazine VOL. 25, NO.12 (DEC 2004)HOW TO SURVIVE THE END OF THE UNIVERSE1. Find and test a 'Theory of Everything'Before an advanced civilization leaps into the unknown, it will need to study the pathways that make it possible to break through to the other side. Toward the end, scientists will need to discover the laws of quantum gravity, which will help to calculate the stability of wormholes connecting our universe to others (universes).2. Search for a naturally occuring wormholeNext, in order to escape from this universe into another one, we will need to find a suitable exit: some wormhole, dimensional gateway, or cosmic tunnel that connects here to there.3. Send a probe through a black holeBalck holes offer another possible avenue of escape. Of course, there are numerous technical problems to be worked out. Most physicists believe that a trip through a black hole would be fatal.4. Create a Black Hole in slow motionOnce the characteristics near the event horizon of a black hole are carefully ascertained by probes, the next step might be to create a black hole in slow motion to gain further experimental data on the characteristics of space-time.5. Create negative energyAn advanced civilization might contemplate opening up a new wormhole by using negative matter or negative energy. In principle, negative matter or energy should weigh less than nothing and fall up rather than down. 6. Make a baby universe(too complicated to explain)7. Send in the nanobotsAssume now that the wormholes created in the previous steps prove unworkable. Perhaps they are unstable, or too small to pass through, or their radiation effects are too intense. If that is the case, intelligent life may have but one remaining option: Send a nanobot through the wormhole to regenerate human civilization on the other side. They Actually think this is a possibility- they are spending your tax money to figure this crap out. Maybe they read 'The Hitchhiker's Guide' and kept all the money to buy cool cars? I could come up with more likely stuff, I mean really.... (Build a Hyperspace Bypass)

_9:50 pm_[glambam] | Why Cyborg? This may not specifically be Douglas Adams related yet in a way it's not completely unrelated soooo..If you are on myspace feel free to...Join this group, Why Cyborg? ........................................................... "Humans will be able to evolve by harnessing the super-intelligence and extra abilities offered by the machines of the future, by joining with them. All this points to the development of a new techno-human species... But be warned - just as we humans split from our chimpanzee cousins years ago, so cyborgs will split from humans. Those who remain as mere humans are likely to become a sub-species. They will, effectively, be the chimpanzees of the future"- Kevin Warwick. I, Cyborg. This is a spot for future cyborgs and non-cyborgs to discuss cyborg news, cyborg issues, cyborg concerns, cyborg policies, cyborg politics, your views on why to become a cyborg or why not become a cyborg, and anything else cyborg. All so that when the time comes we may make a better choice, if of course that choice is ours to make. ................................................................Invite your friends spread the word! _6:39 pm_[bumbletbw] | If It Ain't Broke ... The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a perfect example to what happens to British humor in the hands of a Hollywood studio producers, let alone a studio owned by Disney. Granted I've seen the movie once, and I'm willing to give it a few more chances because of my love for everything Adams prior to this experience. What this movie signals to me is that the people involved didn't understand the book for a variety of reasons. This is a movie that I think would have been very comfortable in the hands of say someone like Terry Gilliam or Spike Jonze ... hell you could even make a compromise between the two and landed Terry Jones (a good friend of Adams). Instead, they not only put this ambitious project in the hands of an unproven director, it would seem that the entire production crew never quite understood what exactly it was that made this universe so funny in the first place.**( Personal Gripes. Spoilers?Collapse )**Overall I was severely disappointed with this movie given the time and care that could have been taken to make a wonderful adaptation of a great piece of sci-fi sarcasm. It was a missed opportunity, but perhaps this movie was simply chopped to death, in which case a DVD release will do this film some much needed good.Even for fans that might not like it, I recommend going to see this movie at least once in theatres, because even though it ends much in the same way the book does (A blatant sequel set-up), without big bank at the box-office it's doubtful that The Restaurant at the End of the Universe will ever get the green light. **Fans, go support DNA.**The best compliment I can give this movie is that it's a different adaptation of the Guide than what I think most fans had envisioned.I gave it a three out of ten on IMDb for dashing my hopes and to help make a dent in the 7.4 overall rating it had at the time. Really I would give this a 5 or a 6. If you look at the voting the higher ratings are coming from younger viewers. To me, that means those giving this film overwhelming reviews are kids that have improbably never been introduced to the radio and TV series. It's very possible this movie may end up going the way of Episode I: having a very negative backlash from the geek faithful and scoring with the kiddies.x-posted lots of places Current Mood: disappointed(5 demolished planets | Build a Hyperspace Bypass)

_4:39 pm_[lproven] | A guide to the Guide communities of Livejournal Sorry to spam you all again, but this will be the last time for a while, I promise. With the aid of johncoxon, dougs & harry_t_skull, I think I have got a comprehensive list of all the HHGTTG and Douglas Adams-related communities on LJ. There are... [drumroll]...Sixteen of them!**( Here's a list with number of members and posts, as of a day or so ago when I compiled this.Collapse )**I don't mean to decry anyone's community or bring anyone down or anything. This is just for public information to help people find one another. My suggestion is this: in the style of Webrings, rather than closing down or merging any communities, that the mods of all of them just post a straightforward list of what other communities are out there on the communities' userinfo pages - and let people choose for themselves. You might want to trim off the statistics on the end of each one. Mods might also want to put in a bit of description of what makes their community special! _3:03 pm_[lproven] | Movie review This is rather older news now, especially since Simo's been Slashdotted, but I thought I'd post it anyway...ZZ9 Research Archivist and world's greatest Guide expert M J "Simo" Simpson has been to a preview. The news, as I have to confess I rather suspected, is Not Good.On his site, Planet Magrathea (the single best site for HHGTTG news in the world), there's both a spoiler-free short review and a longer one which gives the whole game away. And in other news - along with the information, a question: how come there are quite so many HHGTTG communities on LJ? Doesn't anyone bother to check before creating a new one? So far, I know about:• dna_fans• douglasadams• hhgttg• hitchhikermovie• hitchhiking• megadodo• ride_the_galaxy• ursaminorbeta... Any more?**EDIT: and hitchhiker_fans, plus a closed community for ZZ9 members, zz9. Any more? We're nearly into double figures!**A bit of consolidation would be a really good idea. A single community with all the members of all these ones would be a lot more active & interesting!-- Obligatory plug, 'cos I'm the president: join ZZ9, the Official Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Appreciation Society! We have WAY better merchandise than ThinkGeek does, a quarterly magazine, a members-only Yahoo community & mailing list, regular meets and more... Only £8/US$18.50 a year! _7:03 pm_[johncoxon] | froodfest If you're a fan of the Hitchhiker's Guide, why not give this a whirl...The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Role Playing Game - the hoopiest thing ever to come out of the website of Yahoo! Groups. It is a Roleplay (notice the capital letter) of epic proportions, starting where Mostly Harmless left off and then bumming around the Galaxy in ways we've bummed before. (Tried but true ways of course, including lots of Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters and rehibilations groups. And girls. We can't forget the girls.) Pick a character. Email the mod. Get partying. Help the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy crawl back from the very edge of destruction. Help Ford Prefect shove it right up Infinidim's behind! You can read the latest posts from your friends list by adding froodfest to your friends list and if you decide you like it or you want to sign up straight away head over to this page.
