First, the routes connecting fire stations and cultural heritages are selected, and those which are frequently used are designated as important road sections. Next, the road passage rate at the time of disaster is calculated for each important road section. In earlier studies, a method was adopted to find the relationship between road width and the road blockage rate using the data of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake for calculation of road passage rate at the time of disaster. This study also takes the condition of buildings along the roads and the spread of fire into consideration; consequently, a more comprehensive method of calculating the road blockage rate is proposed. Lastly, vulnerable sections of road are identified based on the road passage rate calculated using the proposed...

These projects pose a challenge to researchers to identify suitable technical methods to develop infrastructure layouts that efficiently cater for movement of walking passengers. This paper presents an application in relation to the JR Takatsuki station where there was a narrow island platform catering for large volume of boarding, alighting and transferring passengers. In 2015, the operator has begun expanding the station to alleviate the platform congestion. The objective of the project is to develop a method of forecasting pedestrian flow patterns within a railway station for a proposed new layout of platforms and interconnecting links. The methodology will be demonstrated using Takatsuki station as a case study. The core of the methodology utilizes pedestrian origin-destination pattern to estimate measures of walking effort of pedestrians. In addition to the analytical modelling technique an application of a simulation model is also described. The simulation method is helpful as it is able to provide a visual appreciation of the future operation of the railway concourses. Results indicate that the congestion on the current platform will be alleviated. However, connecting passages to the new platform can become congested because of flow conflicts among transferring passengers and those boarding and alighting.

In recent years, however, the number of automobiles on the road is increasing, and the resultant traffic congestion has resulted in the disruption of bus timetables, with buses arriving late at bus stops. This situation detracts from the convenience of public transportation from the viewpoint of reliability. Information on scheduled running times according to timetables can be easily obtained from various sources, but information about the actual running status of public transportation, taking into account traffic congestion, is not currently provided. The objecitve of this study is to analyze route choice behavior in public transportation assuming that traffic information, including delays due to traffic congestion, is provided. Kyoto is a prime tourist destination for visitors from other parts of Japan and abroad due to the presence of a great many...

The traffic manager has been providing traffic information for alleviating the traffic congestion. However, traffic information used broadly assumes that the current traffic situation does not change. This sometimes makes hunting phenomena that parallel routes are congested in turn, which means temporary oscillation of over-concentration on route is occurred by traffic information. To alleviate this over-concentration, many researchers have researched a study of advanced traffic information. Among these studies, we found trend information as a kind of advanced traffic information and we analysed influences of provision of trend information with jam length information. We made computer-based in-laboratory route choice experiment to collect this data. And we estimated travel time forecast model and route choice model with using the experimental results. Consequently, trend information variables were insignificant...

Supplying a large amount of data may not be always helpful to the users. Therefore, the information system design has to pay attention to supplying the appropriate amount of information using a suitable layout. The primary objective of the sign system in a tourist area is to satisfy the user expectation to visit desirable attractions and use the budgeted time productively without getting lost. The analysis presented here is based on a case study using before and after data of a major tourist area that has modernized the sign system. The main focus of the analysis has been to identify the changes to circulation patterns within the site from view point of quantity and distribution of visitors getting lost.

In this research, the effects of road monitoring systems for cultural heritage disaster mitigation are estimated. The effective location planning of the surveillance cameras is considered based on the locations of cultural heritage sites and the characteristics of the city’s road network. To select the best locations, the genetic algorithm is applied. It is demonstrated that use of the genetic algorithm to select the location of the road monitoring system’s surveillance cameras greatly increases the system’s effectiveness.

Based on individual and urban characteristics a multilevel analysis was conducted on the possibility of commuting trip by private motorized modes on the rush time of 78 cities around the world. Also the selected cities were classified through a principal component analysis, and based on the classification the impact of and urban variables on the possibility of commuting trips made by private motorized modes (PCTP) was verified. Results showed a diverse range of variables related to the usage of PMM, as well as the urban structure and railway lengths being an important variable in travel behavior.

ATIS has been implemented at several developed countries and it is therefore possible empirically to evaluate impacts of ATIS. In this point, this study aims at grasping the change of network traffic flow and the influence of dynamic information provision supported by real-time observation on traffic condition. This study uses divergence rate between two alternative routes to find the influence of provided information on network flow. The divergence rate when incident information is provided is compared with the average divergence rate without congestion. The result suggests the high possibility for drivers to divert his/her route by information.
