The study adopted Social Capital Theory, and Anxiety and Uncertainty Management Theory to support the theoretical framework of the investigation. Data were analysed from a sample of 90 expatriates from selected universities and multinational corporations (MNCs) in the area of Klang Valley, Malaysia. The results reveal that there is a positive relationship between individual factors as well as social capital factors and knowledge transfer. In addition, only shared vision shows a significant influence on knowledge transfer. The regression results disclose that the variables explain 24.1% of variance in knowledge transfer.

Research paper thumbnail of Japanese subcultural event participants in Malaysia and their personal development: preliminary findings

Japanese subcultural products such as animations (anime), comics (manga) and role playing games h... more Japanese subcultural products such as animations (anime), comics (manga) and role playing games have been produced primarily for the Japanese domestic market, yet a large amount are disseminated outside Japan. Consumption of these products is also extended to fan activities such as costume play (cosplay) of anime/manga/game characters and production of secondary products such as art works and fan magazines. There are noticeable numbers of events for anime/manga/game fans organized by students’ clubs at universities and youth groups even in Malaysia. Youth subculture including fan activities is often appraised negatively as an undesirable anti-social activity for personal development of youth. Subcultural event participation also might not be perceived positively by those who have never experienced it. Thus, the study was designed to understand experiences of Malaysian youth who are participating in Japanese subcultural events. This paper reports on preliminary findings from this stu...

Research paper thumbnail of Construction of discursive fandom and structural fandom through anime comics and game fan conventions in Malaysia

European Journal of Cultural Studies, 2016

This article discusses the concept of fandom structures centring on Japanese popular culture fan ... more This article discusses the concept of fandom structures centring on Japanese popular culture fan conventions by highlighting potential factors underlying young Malaysians’ involvement in such conventions. Data were collected from participatory observations at four conventions and interviews with nine Malaysians involved in conventions for at least 5 years. These participants felt marginalized in their school lives because of their fondness for anime, yet they expressed a sense of togetherness while at conventions. For those continuously involved, the conventions were not limited to only a temporal ritual space, as may be explained with the term ‘communitas’. While experiencing a feeling of ‘communitas’ with other convention attendees as of members of their discursive fandom, they acquired a hierarchical system within other activity-based fandom. In this way, young Malaysians have not merely been subsumed into an existing system as the respective structural fandom communities enable ...

Research paper thumbnail of Manga influences and local narratives: ambiguous identification in comics production

Creative Industries Journal, 2018

It focuses on discussing the aspects of manga (Japanese comics) influences and local narratives that are reflected in comics production based on empirical data generated from a qualitative study. In-depth interviews were conducted with ten Malaysian Malay artists, who were fans of Japanese popular culture, regarding their comics production and latest works. Through thematic analysis of the transcribed data, comics production was found to be a challenging endeavour in the presence of nations, locals, and 'others'. There was discrepancy in the constructing of meaning represented in drawings and stories. Such meaning-making processes in the artists' comics production apparently involve the identification of the self and 'others'. Furthermore, their negotiation with the view of 'others' contributes to unbinding their fixed sense of nationality in their products. This study implies that local production of cultural commodities such as comics could serve as a platform for analysis in order to expand and deepen insights into the root causes of contesting identification occurring among people who are assumed to be in the same cultural frame.

Analysis of descriptions made by 158 cosplayers reveals cosplay to function as a medium for the process of self-identification. Cosplay enables Malaysians to explore individual rather than collective identities and to experience fluidity and dilemma in self-identification as they translate fictional characters into their physical world. Although ethnicity seems not to prevail in their cosplay, it appears not to have totally vanished.

This list shows how complex identity can be: it appears as the sum of different parts or components which maintain intricate relations. Researchers sometimes emphasise the separation of different categories of identity (as the use of segmented in the list above shows) while others deal with the connections between different identity aspects (see overlapping). Dervin (2012) claims that Bauman's notion of solid versus liquid identity (2001) can be used to summarise the different approaches of the concept, even if the people under scrutiny in research do not clearly define what they mean by identity. This occurs most of the time when people, politicians, researchers, etc. deal with issues related to culture/cultural identity (Lavanchy, Gajardo and Dervin 2011). The solid conception of identity refers to the association of an individual with s...

With ICT development, the business of ‘content’ – via media entertainment products – has increased its circulation worldwide. Undoubtedly, the U.S. is home to the largest content business in the world, especially in the media entertainment market, based in Hollywood. Japan also developed its own ‘content business’ in the 1980s. In the Japanese content market, 1/3 of book sales are manga (Japanese comic books or magazines) while terrestrial television broadcast companies dominate the domestic visual content market (Onouchi, 2007). Local broadcasting companies have produced 95% of television (TV) programs since the 1980s. Now, those TV programs developed in Japan for domestic audiences have acquired recognition outside of Japan as well. Japanese animation (anime) programs now lead the global animation market accounting for almost 60% of all animated programs (Nakamura & Ono...

Such a study is important in order to understand the consequence of the consumption of foreign cultural products since the development of information communication technology has brought changes to the consumption styles of media entertainment, especially among the younger generation. This approach was considered the most appropriate for describing and understanding individual media consumption experiences in a particular context. Twelve Malaysian young adults were selected by criterion and snowball sampling techniques. In-depth interviews, which lasted between fifty minutes to three hours, were conducted by this researcher. Each interview was recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed via thematic analysis. The other documents related to the production,...
