It has forced many language educators and language assessment specialists to rethink their approach to assessment and explore new ways of evaluating language proficiency resulting in innovation in language assessment territory (Ockey, 2021). Communication problems are at the core of many unexpected health care events comprising unexpected patient deaths and harmful injuries as well as the substantial judicial obligation and fiscal loss for health organizations. Therefore health care practitioners need to have the ability to communicate effectively with diverse patients to provide the desired care. In Malaysia diverse people have been meeting and mixing since the very beginning of its history, so linguistic competency has become a basic quality for health practitioners in Malaysia. Each profession demands job-related language proficiency. In this research, the researcher conducted a case study on a group of nurses from University College Shahputra, Kuantan. She administered a writing test named Occupational English Writing Test, a profession-oriented testing instrument, on the nursing students of University College Shahputra to assess their performance and its suitability in Malaysian context. Some nurses were also interviewed individually. From the test and interview, it stands out that the test is very suitable to be used in Malaysian context and it will have a positive impact on Malaysian health care if it can be implemented for the nurses in Malaysia.

So the implementation of OET will play an increasingly expedient role both in medication and in medical tourism. Occupational English Test is an English language proficiency test for health practitioners intending to check whether health practitioners have sufficient knowledge of English to be used in job-related context. It is designed by Professor Tim Mc Namara under contact with Australian Federal Government and is used by Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. This study using a case study method intends to know the acceptability of OET in Malaysia. The objectives of this study are to assess Malaysian nurses' performance in the existing OET writing test and to know their attitude towards the test. The cases are 31 nursing students from a reputed nursing college in Kuantan, Malaysia. The researcher administers some sample OET writing test questions on the cases at first so that they can have a clear idea about OET and after the test , she interviews 5 cases individually to know their view in detail. The researcher analyzes the result manually. From the test and especially from the interviews, it comes out that OET is very much acceptable to the nurses and though most them are not good in grammar, their performance in test is satisfactory on average because the task is associated with their job.

At the moment the existing English Language tests do not test nurses specifically to use English Language in the context of medical situation. It is the objective of this research to recommend a special test, Occupational English Test (OET) specifically designed for these health practitioners. Specifically the objectives of this research are to assess Malaysian nurses' performance in the OET, to evaluate the suitability of the OET in Malaysian context. The OET is a language test used to assess health practitioners' English language proficiency in medical and health context. It is designed to ensure that language competency is assessed in a relevant professional context. This study employs a case study involving a group of nurses from the medical centre UMP (Pusat Kesihatan Pelajar). The nurses chosen as samples for this research cover all the nurses of Pusat Kesihatan Pelajar. The samples are required to sit for a writing test and they are also interviewed. The test results are analysed manually. Three sets of sample test are revised based on the result of the test and interview and the revised tests will be used to conduct a study on the nursing students of Kolej Kejururawatan and the nursing students of the school of nursing of IIUM to evaluate the suitability of the test in Malaysian context.

Being an important part of the healthcare team, nurses who work in multilingual context need to have necessary command in English to perform their duties effectively. Though Malaysia is a country full of diverse people, there is no specific English language test for Malaysian nurses now. This research aims to experiment a special test, the Occupational English Writing Test (OET) which is specifically designed for health practitioners, on the nurses of two nursing colleges in Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia. Specifically the objectives of this research are to assess Malaysian nurses' performance in the OET and to evaluate its suitability and acceptability in Malaysian context. This study is a case study. The nurses chosen as samples for this research cover 53 nursing students from Kolej Kejururawatan, Kuantan and University College Shahputra, Kuantan. The researcher administers a questionnaire which comprises of three sample OET writing tests. She also interviews some samples individually. The result of this study shows that nurses' English proficiency is not satisfactory. The interviews obviously signify that nurses' lack of communication is a barrier to patient safety. Therefore the nurses need to demonstrate a good communication skill in working context. Thus their language proficiency needs to be tested and OET is suitable for this purpose because OET exemplifies the real difficulty of language performance of health practitioners in work-related context. From the research, it is also crystal clear that OET is very much acceptable for Malaysian nurses.
