A Little Fae of Sunshine (original) (raw)
Well, I didn’t make it into round 3, but since only the top four from each group did, I knew it was a bit of a long shot. I did get quite a bit of nice and helpful feedback from the judges, and I can see from that where my writing could have been improved. (Since it’s been many months, you can re-read my round two entry here: https://roina-arwen.livejournal.com/1712234.html)
Below the cut is the judges feedback. The judges each have a number assigned, not a name. ( Read more...Collapse )
- Current Mood: okay
For round two, my group has been assigned the following:
Genre: Drama
Theme: Independence
Emotion: Regretful
I got my entry written and am happy with how it turned out. I wrote it as an acrostic, and my total word count was 464 words, out of a maximum of 500.
The only downside to the competition is how long we have to wait for results! There are 22 groups of 32 writers. If I make it to round 3 - and only the top FOUR from each group will move onward - that round won’t start until February 3rd. Which means we get our results the day before. So…. Yeah.
After the submission period is over (11:59 pm tonight), I’ll post my entry here.
Just to whet your appetite, my title is “Penelope’s Quest.”
Stay tuned for the entry on Monday!
- Current Mood: accomplished
Guess what??? My round 1 Rhyming Story Challenge got FIFTH place in my group!! This is my best finish to date!
FYI: There were 3,186 writers participating in 88 groups, with approximately 36 writers per group.
The top 8 from each group will participate in round 2 this weekend, and we get put into new groups. Can you tell I’m excited?
Including myself, there are 704 writers advancing, which is still a rather large field!
It’s been several months since our first round entries were submitted, so if you’d like a refresher, you can find my “Italian Innuendo” over here: https://roina-arwen.livejournal.com/1711347.html
I’ll update with my new assignment once we get them. Again I say, HUZZAH!!!
- Current Mood: jubilant
My Flash Fiction round two story “The Hunger” (which you can read here: https://roina-arwen.dreamwidth.org/7483.html) actually got 12th place in my group of 36 writers, and earned me four points (1st place gets 15 points, and the points go down from there).
On the plus side, that’s an improvement from round one - yay!!
On the other hand, round one netted me zero points since I didn’t make the top fifteen, so my total points for both rounds (which is four) is not enough to get me into the top 5 for my group, which means I’m not advancing to the next round.
But hey!! Twelfth is a huge improvement, so I’ll take it!
*Boogie*

As a reminder, this was my group’s assignment, with a maximum length of 600 words:
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Theme: Fulfillment
Emotion: Skeptical
Below is my entry. I did the best I could. Enjoy!

When I first read about the Rhyming Story Challenge, I was intrigued, so what the hell - I signed up. I love poetry, I enjoy writing fiction, so what could be more interesting than combining the two??
We have one week (due by 10/1) to submit a rhyming story (in whatever rhyme scheme we like) with a maximum word count of 600 words. There’s no minimum word count.
We just got our assignments.
My genre is Romantic Comedy
My theme is Fulfillment
My emotion is Skeptical
Not as bad as it could be; at least I got a genre that I’m comfortable with!
Per the rules: The assigned emotion needs to be expressed in the story at least once. For example, if the assigned emotion is "angry", you don't need to specifically include the word "angry" in your story as long as the emotion is being described. As an example, a character "clenching their fists in rage" would clearly express the emotion of anger.
One link we were given as an example was for the runner-up entry from their 2020 Flash Fiction Challenge, titled “Emily Marlow, Subconscious P. I.” which can be read here: https://www.nycmidnight.com/stories/emily-marlow
Fingers crossed I can come up with something good by the deadline. Wish me luck?? Please??
It’s Week 18 in the Dreamwidth-hosted LJ Idol, and we are down to just 14 contestants out of (I think) a starting field of 77. I’m still in it, and hope to get further.
This week we were given TWO topics to write on, so I wrote a two part story. We also have two polls - one for each topic - and the two lowest votes in *each* poll will get a strike.
My entry on the topic “Swim Until You Can’t See Land” is here, and should be read first: https://roina-arwen.dreamwidth.org/8266.html
My entry for the topic of “Ikigai” (a Japanese concept referring to something that gives a person a sense of purpose or a reason for living) can be found here: https://roina-arwen.dreamwidth.org/8577.html
And lastly, the poll (which is open through this Sunday, 9/25 at 9:00 PM Eastern, is here: https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1128292.html
Please read and vote for your favorites - and hopefully I’m one of them! Thanks so much!
- Current Mood: hopeful
It’s been a while since I’ve posted over here! Ever since LJ Idol moved over to Dreamwidth several months ago, I’ve mostly been posting everything over there. It seemed silly to post in two places, you know?
I’ve got the same username on both sites; feel free to friend/“subscribe” to my journal over there if you’d like! If you’ve got a different username on DW, please either comment here or message me to let me know!
LJ Idol is still going strong - we are in week 14 and down to a very talented Top 20, of which I am one. Huzzah!
Should you wish to read (and hopefully vote for) my work, our prompt this week was “Unconventional” and you can find my entry here: https://roina-arwen.dreamwidth.org/6373.html
The Week 14 poll with all the entries can be found using this link, and will close at 9:00 pm tonight (Sunday 8/7/22): https://therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1123882.html
I should note that my Week 14 entry is a continuation from my week 13 story for the prompt “Kintsugi” (the Japanese art of using lacquer mixed with gold dust to beautify broken pottery through repair rather than trying to hide the imperfection), so if you want to read it first - which is optional but probably a good idea - you can easily find it here: https://roina-arwen.dreamwidth.org/5948.html
Thanks so much for reading and supporting my writing over all these seasons, and have a wonderful day!
So I just signed up for the NYC Midnight Microfiction Challenge, which kicks off this Friday (April 22nd).
I’m weirdly excited about doing this - you only get 24 hours to write and submit your entry, and each round you will be assigned a Genre, an Action, and a Word, and your entry must use all three to qualify. The first round, everyone is divided up into groups of 80 writers, and the top 15 of each group will go through to round two. All stories will receive feedback from the judges, and remain the property of the entrant.
It’s a 27entryfee,but27 entry fee, but 27entryfee,but2 of that is donated to one of five or six charities. There are cash prizes for the top 10 winners.
Possible assigned Genres are: Action and/or Adventure; Comedy; Drama; Fairy Tale and/or Fantasy; Ghost Story; Historical Fiction; Horror; Romance; Romantic Comedy; Sci-Fi; Suspense and/or Thriller; and Open Genre.
If you want to sign up or just want more info, you can find it here:

Apologies to “Queen” for using We Will Rock You as my inspiration for this! Enjoy!
=#=#=#=#=#=
Tummy, don’t you lie, make some small noise,
Gimme a reason to be in the fridge again.
I’ve got jam on my face, Pocky by the case,
Enlarging my arse by snacking in place.
My mouth is lonely, so I’ll nom you - CRUNCH!
It’s so lonely, so I’ll nom you - MUNCH!
Mindlessly I snack on greasy chips and dip,
Platters with crackers and cheese once again.
Smudged chocolate on my face, sodas by the case,
Spreading my crumbs all over the place.
My mouth is lonely, so I’ll nom you - CRUNCH!
It’s so lonely, so I’ll nom you - MUNCH!
Tummy, you’re distended, hard as a rock.
My snacking has gone on for long enough.
I’d better stop right now, I’m such a cow,
I’ve gained twenty pounds, and don’t know how!
My mouth is lonely, so I’ll nom you - CRUNCH!
It’s so lonely, so I’ll nom you - MUNCH!
(Repeat ad nauseum)
