LJ in financial trouble? (original) (raw)
oh my god, i hope that is false, and that everyone will at least get fair warning so we can somehow archive.
i wonder if us permanent account holders will get some sort of compensation if that happens
Hi Ron - I just posted this in thetathx1138's journal and thought you might be interested.
After following the Mac directions (and hitting return after each of the "Type:" instructions), all my journal comments and entries have downloaded to Users -> [my computer username] -> ljdump1.2 -> dianalily
Within the dianalily file is the entire download. There are documents starting with "C" and with "L". I dragged one of each to RichText to open (if I just click on the document, an empty browser window opens up).
The "C" documents are all comments made in reply to an entry, date included.
The "L" documents are also numbered in sequential order and are my journal entries. And they're in XML format. So the date is included, but the format is decidedly not elegant.
I hope this helps you! I'm not a Mac expert by any means but wanted to let you know following those instructions you posted did achieve the desired result of archiving my LJ.
Thanks. What I want to do is back up the davis_square community (where I'm one of the maintainers), not my private journal. Backing up both posts and comments is important. How would I do this?
antennapedia explains a method that appears to archive in a more orderly manner than the method I used above.
I can only suggest giving it a try and seeing what happens.
Otherwise, it will take cutting and pasting each comment entry into each journal entry. And that sounds like more work than creating tags.
I have to run but will be back later, perhaps with more answers if I can talk to people!

Use LJSM. Submit your username and password using the -u option and give your community name as the username to archive.
I did this. It downloaded all of davis_square but took several hours. Also, it doesn't unfold comments unless I use the -t switch to ship my username and password off to a Russian server -- something I'm not willing to do.
You do this every time you log into LiveJournal.
edit: Oh wait, that's the threader option. I see.

SUP owns LJ, Inc. LJ, Inc. owns the servers, so as far as I'm concerned, they're Russian.
Apparently the real number is actually about 13, which is moderately better, and they released a press-release talking about longterm plans for LJ. I'm still nervous too, though.
ljbook.com may do what you want, though has been overloaded all day, unsurprisingly. (It works with communities and includes comments.)
I haven't tried http://fawx.com/software/ljarchive/ but I've seen it linked many places.
Some time in the last few hours, the Gawker/ValleyWag article was silently changed to say that LJ cut "12 of 28 employees", when it had formerly said "20 of 28". (I'll update my post.)
As I saw you post on Margalit's blog (whatwas_i_think), I thought I'd welcome you to the permanent LJ-ers. You can see my post on the subject here.
Thanks. Was I supposed to get some sort of automatic invitation to permmembers? I never did, and found out about the community only by accident. I even asked on paidmembers whether there was a similar community for perms, and didn't get a response from anyone.
I've been exchanging some comments with the developers of ljdump and ljmigrate (both Python programs), if you're interested in LJ backup solutions for the Linux or Mac environment.

No, there is no automatic notification of permmembers, other than postings in the comment thread. I'm a PC user -- I do have to update my backup after 4 years.
I thought you might find it interesting I had Margalit syndicated here -- I normally read her on my Friends list.
