A solemn start to Queen Margrethe's Golden Jubilee - Royal Central (original) (raw)

The Queen of Denmark has begun her Golden Jubilee by attending a solemn meeting of the State Council.

Margrethe II was joined by her son and heir, Crown Prince Frederik, for the meeting at Christiansborg Palace.

The meeting was limited to just five ministers owing to the current restrictions for the coronavirus pandemic. Leading the politicians was Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen who gave a speech congratulating the Queen on her Jubilee.

The focus of the State Council was commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the accession of Queen Margrethe. She became her country’s Monarch on January 14th 1972 on the death of her father, King Frederik IX.

During the 50th anniversary meeting, Margrethe spoke of her first Council of State as Queen, which took place on January 15th 1972. She also thanked politicians past and present for their respect throughout her reign.

The Council of State marking the Jubilee was the 560th that Queen Margrethe II has taken part in since ascending her country’s throne.

Crown Prince Frederik sat at his mother’s side throughout the meeting. He has now been Denmark’s heir for half a century.

Queen Margrethe’s Jubilee events have been scaled back because of the pandemic. Bigger celebrations are planned for September 2022.
