Queen Margrethe's Golden Jubilee celebrations revealed - Royal Central (original) (raw)

The first details of major celebrations marking the Golden Jubilee of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark have been announced.

Margrethe took the throne on January 14th 1972 and the Danish Royal Household has now revealed several major events marking her fifty year long reign that will take place at the start of 2022.

Just days before the anniversary of her accession, Queen Margrethe will hold a press conference while on the eve of the big day itself, she will open a special exhibition at the Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen called ”The Queen’s Jewellery Box, A Royal Collection.”

The events of January 14th itself will mark the sombre as well as celebratory aspects of the day. As well as being the anniversary of her accession, the date also marks fifty years since the death of her father, King Frederik IX, and Denmark’s Queen will make a poignant visit to his grave at Roskilde Cathedral on January 14th 2022. There she will lay a wreath in remembrance of him and her mother, Queen Ingrid, who is buried alongside him.

January 14th 2022 will also see Queen Margrethe joined by her heir, Crown Prince Frederik, for a special meeting of Denmark’s Council of State which will take place at Christiansborg Castle. Hours later, her younger son, Prince Joachim, along with Crown Princess Mary and Princess Marie will accompany Margrethe II as the Danish Parliament celebrates her long reign.

There will be a major balcony appearance on January 15th 2022 when the Queen of Denmark is joined by her whole family at Christian IX’s Palace at Amalienborg where large crowds of wellwishers are expected to gather to cheer her. From there, Margrethe will take part in a carriage procession to Copenhagen City Hall for an official lunch and another balcony appearance. The evening will see her attend a gala performance in her honour at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, with the royal party again arriving by carriage.

Queen Margrethe will attend a special thanksgiving service at Our Lady’s Church in Copenhagen on Sunday January 16th 2022 before a glittering end to this major phase of her Jubilee celebrations that evening. As the weekend draws to a close, she will gather her family, foreign guests and Danish dignitaries around her for a gala dinner at Christiansborg Castle.

The Jubilee celebrations will continue throughout the year with trips around Denmark planned. Queen Margrethe will also give a number of interviews while TV programmes and books marking the milestone are also planned.

The official logo for her Golden Jubilee has also been launched, designed by the agency Kontrapunkt.

There will also be a focus throughout the year on the motto that Margrethe adopted when she became Queen: ””God’s help, the love of the people, the strength of Denmark”.

Royal Central will keep you up to date with all the Jubilee plans and celebrations throughout the coming months.
