It will offer insights on the dissemination and reception of fake news by addressing an important - yet overlooked - research question: what role does language play in the production and proliferation of fake news?
We invite papers that address this question from different angles, investigating:
● The register, style, and rhetoric of fake news
● Fake news in translation
● The relationship between political and propagandistic language and fake news
● The linguistic variations between rumours and fake news
● The historical evolution of the languages of fake news
● The visual languages of fake news
● The impact of ‘media revolutions’ on the languages of fake news

As a result, the cultural significance of some of the ideas or textual productions developed in these institutions can be hard to assess. Examining one or more academies in the social context(s) in which they developed allows for a deeper understanding of their cultural influence. Contributions to this
panel will explore connections between social history and intellectual history in the history of early modern academies through case studies focusing on one or (at most) two academies.

Each project is developing a proof of concept user interface that aims at engaging different audiences (from experts to casual users) at different levels of agency (from participatory methods to serendipitous discovery) - setting an example for organisations dealing with similar digital collections and technologies.

Bringing to light a document housed at the Archivio di Stato in Florence, this article revolves around a dispute in 1637 within the Florentine Accademia del Disegno. While visiting Florence, Giulio Veterani, a nobleman from Urbino, attended one of the ordinary meetings of the academy and raised the following question: are prints to be considered drawings? Whilst this dispute embodies the intellectual exchanges and the conversations characteristic of early 17th century academies, the debate – which also refers to military drawings, sketches, architectural plans and grotteschi – comes almost five decades before Filippo Baldinucci’s theorization of prints and engravings in his Cominciamento e progresso dell’arte dell’intagliare in rame (1686).

The Book of Art by Cennino Cennini can be considered the first attempt to acknowledge the creative license of art (specifically of painting) and thus the starting point of this evolution; an evolution that is later promoted through the treatises of art during Quattrocento and Cinquecento, in which artists and literati freely exchange ideas about the intellectual potential of art and the status of the artist. I also argue that the academies of art of the XVI century represent the peak of this process of intellectualization: interestingly, these academies were modeled after the pedagogical structure characterizing the humanistic educational system. The artists and literati included in this dissertation voice a common aspiration: giving a theoretical basis to art inasmuch as it is considered to be disciplined by the intellect and thus worthy of being included in the liberal arts. This research touches upon some of the main issues inherent to the Renaissance , such as the idea of ars versus ingenium ; the dispute about which author to imitate when writing on a topic that has never been dealt before; the quarrel originating from the Horatian concept of ut pictura poësis .
