Jack Saffery-Rowe

I completed my BA Politics from Royal Holloway, University of London in June 2015. I'm currently working for the School of Advanced Study, UoL and carrying out research on the side.

My undergraduate dissertation (2:1) focused on the tensions between socialism and African nationalism in the anti-colonial struggle and the labour movement in South Africa 1917-1939.

My other research interests include feminism and gender, queer theory and history, British subaltern history and politics.

African domestic workers are at the intersection of race, class and gender in the apartheid syste... more African domestic workers are at the intersection of race, class and gender in the apartheid system. Being almost exclusively African women, they live under the 'triple' oppression of being black, proletarian women. This essay will argue that these women hold a paradoxical position in apartheid by virtue of being integral to the functioning of the white home, which is where the very ideology which creates and maintains the African woman's triple oppression is reproduced.
