This paper presents the design and construction of a comprehensive digital security system with t... more This paper presents the design and construction of a comprehensive digital security system with the aim of providing a 24 hour digital watchdog for institutions such as banks, schools, the church, residential homes or anything that requires monitoring. The infra-red and digital technologies were used in the realization of this objective. The infra-red (I.R.) signal is transmitted by an I.R diode which is intercepted and decoded by the receiver circuitry. Obstructing the line of sight (within 8 meters) produced a digital display of the zone trespassed. This also triggers an alarm, both of which are designed to have duration of 30 seconds. The transmitters and sensors should be raised at least 1 meter above the ground to ensure that only humans trigger the alarm.

An analysis of the effect of parameter variations is also performed on the model. Radiation change, temperature, shunt and series resistance are the parameters analyzed. Results show that when the series resistance increases in value, both the output power and the short-circuit current to decrease. A reduction in the shunt resistance was observed to cause a reduction in the output power and short circuit current. Furthermore, an increase in temperature causes a reduction in the open-circuit voltage. As the solar irradiance increases, the short circuit current increases also. It was observed generally that variations in the parameters of a PV cell affect the PV cell characteristics.

Previous work on the Shockley diode equation uses the Fermi – Dirac statistics. In this report, we will use the classical Maxwell Boltzmann statistics. For simplicity, the model considered is the single diode photovoltaic cell model. The Shockley diode equation is first formulated using Maxwell Boltzmann (MB) statistics. A single diode model equation is then derived and simulated. Matlab was used to perform the simulations using looping iterative method. Results that were obtained were identical with the typical single diode photovoltaic cell model current - voltage and power - voltage plots.
