A simple pseudo-heterogeneous transesterification process of used cooking oil with methanol was conducted to produce methyl esters using calcined alkali metal supported rice husk silica as a solid catalyst. Alkali metal silicate catalysts showed longer lasting activity than the traditional alkali catalysts. The optimum conditions for the process were: alkali metals silicate calcination temperature 500 C, time 3 h; catalyst amount 3%; methanol to oil molar ratio 9:1; and a reaction temperature of 65 C. The process was able to transesterify oil to methyl esters in the range of 96.5e98.2% in 1 h for all series. The catalyst is able to tolerant free fatty acid and moisture up to 1.25% and 1.75%, respectively. The catalyst was easily separated from the reaction mixture by filtration and able to reuse six times. The final product met the selected biodiesel fuel properties in accordance with European Standard (EN) 14214.

Treatment of onion with ethanol delayed rooting, sprouting and reduced decay in both cultivars. Chemical analysis and organoleptic tests showed that the treatments had no adverse effect on the quality of onion. Pre-storage treatment with 100% CO2 for 3.5 and 7 days enhanced rooting and sprouting, while 14-days treatment exhibited a slight inhibitory effect.

The model was applied to an enclosed bay located in the western part of Japan, where eutrophication and associated onset of hypoxia at the bottom waters would occur in every summer. A field survey of fish behavior under hypoxic and non-hypoxic waters was conducted by releasing marbled sale in the bay and tracked its movement. At the same time, vertical profiles of DO, salinity and water temperature were measured at every 0.5m vertical interval at several locations along the tracking path of fish. Moreover, a series of preference tests for DO, salinity and temperature in the laboratory were conducted in order to decide preference parameters of fish. The model could simulate reasonably the observed behavior and movement of the fish under both hypoxic and non-hypoxic waters in the bay; thereby, validated its applicability. Using the model, an assessment of the impact of the ongoing land reclamation project of about 400 ha in the bay on the fisheries resources was also conducted. The results showed that a substantial mortality of the fisheries resources would take place when hypoxic condition occurs in every summer and the construction of the artificial land will lower the mortality rate of fish during the summer period in the bay. Strong offshore winds cause the upwelling of bottom hypoxic waters in summer and the initial mortality of the fisheries resources increase under northerly offshore wind of 5 m/s or more.

Objective: We examined whether multiple micronutrient supplementation is more efficacious than is supplementation with iron and folic acid alone for improving the hemoglobin and iron status of anemic adolescent girls in Bangladesh. Design: Anemic (hemoglobin 12.0 g/dL) girls (n ҃ 197) aged 14 -18 y from rural schools in Dhaka District were entered into a randomized double-blind trial and received twice-weekly supplements of iron and folic acid (IFA group) or multiple micronutrients (15 micronutrients, including iron and folic acid; MMN group) for 12 wk. Results: At recruitment, the characteristics of the girls in the 2 groups were not significantly different, except for family size and body mass index. At the end of the study, although both groups benefited significantly from supplementation, mean changes in hemoglobin and serum ferritin concentrations were not significantly different between groups. Compared with the IFA group, girls in the MMN group had significantly greater increases in mean serum vitamin A, plasma vitamin C, red blood cell folic acid, and riboflavin concentrations (assessed as erythrocyte glutathione reductase activation coefficient). After 12 wk of supplementation, only the prevalence of vitamins A and C and riboflavin deficiencies decreased more significantly in the MMN group than in the IFA group. Conclusions: Twice-weekly MMN supplementation for 12 wk significantly improved the status of the micronutrients assessed but was not more efficacious than was supplementation with iron and folic acid alone in improving the hematologic status of anemic adolescent girls. More frequent doses may be needed to achieve full benefit.

An experimental investigation for the distribution of SMV for each and every operation requires for making a T-shirt and provides a clear and detail concepts for determining line balancing, machine requirements, man power allocation, operational sequence of the manufacturing process for setting a definite target within a reasonable efficiency. This study is a detailed discussion and distribution of SMV of a T-shirt by work study which will assist to minimize the SMV for having a better synchronization with man, machine, materials and methods to achieve higher efficiency. A general overview over efficient productive method to make a T-shirt is given in this paper.

Aman (July -December) 1995 to Boro (December -May) 1998 at BRRI farm, Gazipur. Rice caseworm mostly damaged the rice plants 2 to 4 weeks after transplanting. The incidence occurred at 15th August and subsequent transplanting dates during T. Aman season and the highest leaf damage was observed in case of mid October planting. In Boro season, the incidence occurred in the late February. There were two peak incidence of caseworm in the month of August and October.

The cross sectional study was conducted to explore the pattern of sex behavior and knowledge of HIV among transport workers in Dhaka city. Among the total 230 respondents mostly 39.1% were in the age group of 26-35 years and the mean age of respondent was 31.26 years. Mostly 42.2% of the respondents were in the secondary level of education. Among the total respondents majority 80.9% had poor knowledge and 47.8% confessed they conducted pre-marital or ex-marital sex in life. The study suggests awareness program is recommended.
