Research paper thumbnail of Collective Aggregation Pattern Dynamics Control via Attractive/Repulsive Function

Complex, 2009

In the coordinated collective behaviors of biological swarms and flocks, the attractive/repulsive... more In the coordinated collective behaviors of biological swarms and flocks, the attractive/repulsive (A/R) functional link between each pair of particles plays an important role. By changing the slope of the A/R function, a dramatic transition between different aggregation patterns surfaces. With a high value of the slope, the particle aggregation shows a liquid-like pattern in which the outer particles are sparsely distributed while the inner ones densely. In addition, the particle density is reduced from the outside to the inside of each cluster. By comparison, when the slope decreases to a sufficiently low value, the particle aggregation exhibits a crystal-like pattern as the distance between each pair of neighboring particles remains constant. Remarkably, there is an obvious spinodal in the curve of particle-particle distance variance versus the slope, indicating a transition between liquid-like and crystal-like aggregation patterns. Significantly, this work may reveal some common mechanism behind the aggregation of physical particles and swarming of organisms in nature, and may find its potential engineering applications, for example, UAVs and multi-robot systems.

This type of environment is to be designed and processed so that it is compatible with a person’s thoughts. In this environment the designers’ thoughts are effectively taken to process functional requirements of products. The concept of designing and evaluating the schemes of the products can be achieved and furthermore optimized, the structure designing and its manufacturability analysis are carried out. This paper studies cell classes of the functions and structures. By the use of artificial intelligent technology the knowledge required and the innovative scheme expressed are developed. As an example, an intelligent design of a motorcycle is used to illustrate the application of the method to produce an innovative scheme.

Research paper thumbnail of Opposing Early and Late Effects of Insulin-Like Growth Factor I on Differentiation and the Cell Cycle Regulatory Retinoblastoma Protein in Skeletal My Oblasts

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 1995

The phosphorylation state of the ubiquitous nuclear retinoblastoma protein (Rb) plays an important role in determining whether myoblasts proliferate or differentiate: Phosphorylated Rb promotes mitogenesis, whereas un- (or hypo-) phosphorylated Rb promotes cell cycle exit and differentiation. We hypothesized that IGFs might affect the fate of myoblasts by regulating the phosphorylation of Rb. Although long-term IGF treatment is known to stimulate differentiation, we find that IGFs act initially to inhibit differentiation and are exclusively mitogenic. These early effects of IGFs are associated with maintenance of Rb phosphorylation typical of proliferating cells; upregulation of the gene expression of cyclin-dependent kinase 4 and cyclin D1, components of a holoenzyme that plays a principal role in mediating Rb phosphorylation; and marked inhibition of the gene expression of myogenin, a member of the MyoD family of skeletal muscle-specific transcription factors that is essential in muscle differentiation. We also find that IGF-induced inhibition of differentiation occurs through a process that is independent of its mitogenic effects. We demonstrate, thus, that IGFs regulate Rb phosphorylation and cyclin D1 and cyclin-dependent kinase 4 gene expression; together with their biphasic effects on myogenin expression, these results suggest a mechanism by which IGFs are initially mitogenic and subsequently differentiation-promoting in skeletal muscle.

Using a SIL with n=1.516 to focus a 150-fs, 800-nm Ti:sapphire laser, the 5-layer reading and writing of data are achieved in fused silica and polyethylene methacrylate at a density of 1.1*10^(12) b/cm3. Some advantages of the employment of SIL have been discussed.

From the heat capacity curves, the ordering temperatures are found to be 7.5, 3.0, and 8.1 K for DyNiC2, HoNiC2, and ErNiC2, respectively. Also a small peak is found at 4.7 K for DyNiC2. The heat

Photocurrent density proportional to the cubic of intensity of incident light over three orders of magnitude at both temperatures shows not only thatthe electron emission is three-photon photoemission, but also that thermal emission is nebligible at room temperature in our case. The photoemissive current from a P-type monocrystal GaAs substrate activated only by caesium shows six power dependence on light intensity . Comparisons of measured three-photon photoemission coefficient of GaAs(Cs,02) with a theoretical estimated values and with four-photon photoemission coefficient of a Cs3Sb photocathode are given.
