In the article "Digital transformation: A multidisciplinary reflection and research agenda," Here discuss the drivers of digital transformation and the strategic imperatives that result from digital transformation. Taking a business model perspective, the authors highlight how the demands for and execution of digital resources, organizational structure, growth strategy and metrics have changed in response to digital change. By identifying three stages of digital transformation-digitization, digitalization, and digital transformation-they delineate several growth strategies for digital firms that require specific (platform-based) structures and bears important consequences for measuring success (e.g., focus on sentiment-and engagement-related measures). The authors conclude with a research agenda on digital transformation. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the topic of digital transformation, this commentary reflects on the multiple perspectives, and applies them to the pinnacle form of digital transformation: the development of new digital platforms. To highlight the complexity of making platform design decisions, this commentary discusses the strategic analysis of platform openness.

Drawing on the theory of organizational readiness for change, we develop the construct of digital readiness. Past research neglects the role of industry on digital readiness. Following the prior IS studies on the industry effect, we argue that industries shape firms\u27 technological needs and view digital readiness as configurations depending on these needs. Further, we investigate the performance impacts of various digital readiness configurations to address the inconclusive findings on the business value of digital transformation. Our study offers significant contributions to the IS literature on organizational readiness and digital transformation

Viewing digital transformation as a process of change, we draw from change management literature and propose that firm digital readiness is necessary to explain the success of the digital transformation and better firm performance. However, readiness concept has not been systematically understood. As part of a construct development project, this short study focuses on analyzing what has been done with organizational readiness in the information systems (IS) literature and identifies the limitations of this research stream. Integrating the theory of organizational readiness for change, the extant IS research on organizational readiness as well as the context of digital transformation, this study proposes a comprehensive digital readiness construct. Digital readiness consists of digital assets, digital capabilities and digital commitment. The future steps and expected cont...

Drawing on the awareness-motivation-capability (A–M–C) framework, this study proposes a framework of three key drivers: digital orientation, change commitment and organizational agility, which jointly and synergistically support digital transformation. Survey data from 235 Dutch firms support our theory and indicate that organizational agility can only have a positive influence on digital transformation when digital orientation and change commitment are present. This study extends our understanding of the drivers of digital transformation and challenges a sole focus on agility in past research

Platform openness results from a series of decisions on how open a platform is regarding: (a) suppliers, (b) customers, (c) complementary service providers, as well as to (d) product categories and (e) channels. By conducting a scoping literature review, we analyze the current body of knowledge about the drivers, dimensions and outcomes of platform openness. Using an expert panel discussion and analysis of real-world digital platforms, we confront this existing knowledge with current business challenges to identify research challenges. We address how future research can advance platform research by tackling these challenges.
