INTRODUCTION Among the collection of books and manuscripts left to the Bodleian Library by the seventeenth-century Dutch philologist, art historian, etymologist and lexicographer, Francis Junius (1591-1677), there are six items which provide evidence of Junius's interest in Scots. (2) They are: MSS Junius 4 and 5, Junius's etymological dictionary of English, published posthumously in 1743 by the antiquarian Edward Lye under the title Etymologicum Anglicanunr, MS Junius 6, his glossary of Chaucer's works; MS Junius 9, his annotated edition of The Workes of Our Antient and Learned English Poet, Geffrey Chaucer, Newly Printed, ed. Thomas Speght (London, 1598); MS Junius 54, Junius's annotated copy of Gavin Douglas, XIII. Bukes of Eneados of the Famose Poete Virgil Translatet Out of Latyne Verses into Scottish Metir (London, 1553); MS Junius 74, fols. 18-36r, a glossary of Scots words with mostly Greek etyma; MS Junius 114, Junius's notes on Gavin Douglas, Eneados...

Nonetheless, there is an advantage in acquainting students with modern electronic tools allowing relevant, piecemeal investigations into the lexicon. This contribution focuses on the usage of Evoke in the classroom, suggesting the types of assignments that may be designed for this purpose and exploring further possibilities.

M. White, OUP, Oxford, 1878) pays little or no attention to its seventeenth-century readers and owners: the philologists Jan van Vliet (1622-1666) and Francis Junius (1591-1677). This study aims to fill this lacuna in the reception history of the Ormulum by analysing the study of the Ormulum in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. The results show a vivid and imaginative approach to the Ormulum by its first active student, Jan van Vliet, who discovered its metrical qualities and studied its lexicon. Despite a declining interest in the Ormulum by later scholars, the activities and ideas of its early readers have been a lasting influence on the reception of this unique text. Keywords Ormulum • Reception history • Lexicon • Jan van Vliet • Francis Junius In 1852, the reverend Robert Meadows White (1798-1865) published the Ormulum in a two-volume edition produced by Oxford University Press. 1 A fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford, and a former Rawlinson professor of Anglo-Saxon, White had worked from 1832 to 1852 on his Ormulum edition plus glossary, harvesting admiration but also criticism, both at home and abroad (Carlyle 2009). Immediately after its appearance, during Hilary Term of 1853, White's successor John Earle offered lectures on the Ormulum 'as a textbook for the transition period

Logeman based his accusation on an unfortunate remark Sweet had made in his edition of the Old English translation of Pope Gregory's Pastoral Care. For this scholarly edition, Sweet had wished to include the text of London, British Library, Cotton Tiberius B. xi. However, having barely survived the Ashburnham House blaze of 1731, this manuscript had been almost entirely consumed by fire at a bookbinder's in 1865. As a replacement, Sweet had used Oxford, Bodleian Library, Junius 53, a transcript made by the seventeenth-century philologist Francis Junius (1591–1677) when the Cotton manuscript was still unscathed. Sweet praised Junius and emphasized the accuracy of the transcript by stating that Junius only ‘swerved from the path of literal accuracy in a few unimportant par...
