Research paper thumbnail of Молитва архангела Михаила против вештицы в рукописи Николы Хаджина / Prayer of the Archangel Michael Against the Věshtitsa in the Manuscript of Nikola Hadžin

The redaction of the prayer of the archangel Michael, written in the XIXth century by priest Niko... more The redaction of the prayer of the archangel Michael, written in the
XIXth century by priest Nikola Hadžin, differs from other redactions: the archangel talks with veshtitsa as well as her companions – vila and mora. It seems that the addition of two new heroes can be explained by the interpretation of a typical prayer title with the list of dangers. The elimination of a number of episodes in the plot is connected with the change in the pragmatics of the text: now it can be used not only
as a defense of the home, but also as a personal amulet. The influence of South Slavic lores on the text is combined with the linguistic features of the prayer, which represents features of a vernacular language in the phonetics, morphology and syntax.

The investigation of four combinations shows that the second component of the pair is a lexeme with a Slavic rootwell known Russian speakers. The model of constructions only in rare cases correlates with the Latin-language sources: Institutiones philosophiae rationalis methodo Wolfii conscripta (1735) and Elementa philosophiae recentiorisusibus juventutis scholasticae accommodata (1747) by Fr. Chr. Baumeister. In his explanations Makariy Petrovich uses the vocabulary of Russian language, Polonisms and Polish lexical derivation model. The comparison with historical diсtionaries of the Russian language and texts of the 18th century and earlier from the National Corpus of the Russian Language identifies the first fixation of some words in the “Logic”.

This part of vocabulary represented by a few examples interesting due to its heterogeneity. The translator uses several and not just traditional models of adaptation of Greekisms. The variability of ways of adaptation is associated with different degrees of using the lexemes, therefore, Slavic manuscripts contain original spellings.

Research paper thumbnail of Изобличение вора на Руси: от постановления Новгородского архиепископа Иоанна III до низовой рукописной книжности / The Ritual of “Exposing the Thief” in Old Rus: From the Enactment by the Archbishop of Novgorod Ioann III to Apocryphal Manuscript Culture

The Old Russian ritual of “Exposing the Thief” (“The Decree on the Proskomedia to the Holy Three ... more The Old Russian ritual of “Exposing the Thief” (“The Decree on the Proskomedia to the Holy Three Confessors Gurias, Samonas and Abibus”) was written by the Archbishop of Novgorod, Ioann III. The creation of the text was inspired by the sign from the icon of the confessors on December 24, 1410 in St. Sophia Cathedral. The full text of the “Decree…” is preserved in two copies from the 16th –17th centuries, whereas the prayer alone until recently was known in two copies not earlier than the 17th century. The corpus of copies of the prayer was replenished with two copies in manuscripts from the end of the 14th or the beginning of the 15th century and from the 18th century, respectively. The discovery of the first copy raised the question about the original text written by Archbishop Ioann: did he write the prescriptive part for a previously known prayer only or the full text? A textual study of the “Decree…” and the copies of the prayer allows to reconstruct the history of the text and conclude that the archetype contained both the prayer and the prescriptive part. Thus, it could be confirmed that the author of both parts of the “Decree…” is Archbishop Ioann, but the prayer is a less uniform formation. The comparison with Slavic prayers showed that the fragment about the forefathers, going back to a Greek tradition, was borrowed by Ioann from a South Slavic manuscript, while the first part of the text about the three confessors was compiled by the archbishop himself in the context of the special attitude of Novgorod to the cult of St. Gurias, Samonas and Abibus.

The study of phonetic and grammatical features of the manuscript and its comparative analysis with contemporary and later dialectal material allows to conclude that its scribes were speakers of the Novgorod dialect or some dialect of the north-eastern periphery of the Novgorod Land. The following dialect features were discovered in both parts of the manuscript: the realization of *ě as [i] in stressed position, the distinction between the vowels [o] and [a] in unstressed syllables, the palatalised quality of the long voiceless sibilant [ʃʲː] in contrast with the non-palatalised voiced sibilants [ʒ], [ʒː], merger of the voiceless alveolar affricate /ts/ and the
voiceless postalveolar affricate /tʃ/, syncretic inflection of a-stem nouns in Gen.–Dat.–Loc. singular, adjective inflection — yma/-ima in Instr. plural, constructions with the existential modal est’ and present tense forms. The dialect of the second scribe is also characterized by
voiced velar fricative [γ], the use of the preposition uv, the desinence -amy/-yamy in the Instr. plural of the nouns and the use of the Nominative in the function of direct object in infinitival and participial clauses. The co-occurrence of two types of syncretic genitive/dative/locative
form of *а̄-stem nouns suggests either simultaneous use of different inflections, which was typical of the Novgorod dialect in the first half of the 17th century, or the use of different protographs by the scribes.

Research paper thumbnail of О происхождении фольклорного гидронима Аполевта / The Origin of the Folklore Hydronym Apolevta

In their article devoted to hydronyms in the oral and handwritten charms of the North Russian, T.... more In their article devoted to hydronyms in the oral and handwritten charms of the North Russian, T. A. Agapkina, E. L. Berezovich, and O. D. Surikova comment on the name of a fiery river Apolevta assuming that there may exist two copies of the text. The authors suggest that this river name might either originate from an unestablished Greek word or else, is a case of erroneous usage. The author of the present work argues the existence of one single copy of the text that was published by N. N. Vinogradov in 1910. As regards the hydronym Apolevta, the structure
of the original text (particularly, the space organization) testifi es to an incorrect interpretation by the scribe: in fact, the text uses a short form of the adjective with a postpositive particle -to which frequently occurs in North Russian dialects. Thus, the hydronym Apolevta is a result of an incorrect reading of the source by V. A. Ivanovsky

The text is based on the variation of Short redaction of the Life that appears in the manuscript RGB-722/7 and a short redaction of the Novgorod Third Chronicle. Seemingly, the redactor also used other unknown sources like the "list of Novgorod bishops", which included ordination and death dates of archbishops, and a text with notation of translation of relics. Novgorod the Great should be considered the place of origin of the text for two reasons. First, in the 18th century Moses was venerated locally. Second, the text includes many local geographic details that could be added only by a novgorodian.
