Ayurveda, the science of life, is the traditional practice of medicine in India which provides th... more Ayurveda, the science of life, is the traditional practice of medicine in India which provides the signs, symptoms and treatment for various diseases including poison. Mosquito bites has been included under Mashaka visha (a type of insect poisoning) under one among the eight branches of Ayurveda, named Agadatantra, which deals with Ayurvedic toxicology. Various types of mosquitos including the fatal ones, their signs and symptoms, treatment of the complications arising due to their bites and various fumigations to repel them, has been well explained in the Ayurvedic classics, most of which are unknown to the society. As the health hazards arising due to the complication of mosquito bites turns life threatening, it becomes essential to explore alternative methods to control them and Ayurveda is one such science which offers it. The preventive and curative methods explained in the ayurvedic classics may be adopted to reduce the drastic number of vectors borne diseases arising due to mosquitoes. This article aims at bringing to light, the treatment methods explained in Ayurvedic classic for the management of mosquito bites and their complications.

Mosquitocides are substances or agents specifically designed to kill or control mosquitoes. There... more Mosquitocides are substances or agents specifically designed to kill or control mosquitoes. There are several reasons for the need of mosquitocides, and they play a crucial role in public health and environmental management. Some of the key reasons for the need of mosquitocides are disease control, public health protection, epidemic prevention and livestock protection. The widespread application of chemical insecticides resulted in a number of health problems as well as the emergence of resistant mosquito populations. They can be liquids, creams, coils, sprays, or any combination of these. Mosquitocides are intended to specifically target and eliminate mosquitoes, but they may also have unintended consequences for people, pets, and the environment. It's crucial to remember that the precise adverse effects can change based on the kind of mosquitocide applied. Among the health issues mentioned are irritability of the skin and respiratory tract, ocular irritation, toxicity in animals, and effects on the environment. Therefore, keeping this view in concern, alternative control measures can be considered, where the ayurvedic herbal mosquitocide is elaborately reviewed and concluded.

Arka is a well-known medicinal plant in Indian system of medicine and also it is one among the Upavishas. According to Charaka Acharya, Even an acute poison can become an excellent medicine if administered properly & On other hand even most useful medicine can act like a poison if handled incorrectly. Unique methodology of using semipoisonous plants in treatment has shown good outcome in therapeutics. The drug Arka is an important ingredient of various classical vishahara yogas in clinical practice since ages. It is included under Bhedaniya (Vagbhata) Vamanopaga, Svedopaga (Charaka), Arkadi, Adhobhagahara Gana (Susruta) and also included under Guduchyadi Osadhi varga (Bhavaprakash). This review article includes overall information about plant Arka, it's Botanical description, toxicological aspect, management, medico-legal aspect and therapeutic traditional uses and Arka containing Agada yogas mentioned in Keraleeya Visha Vaidya Granthas.

Neeli or Indian indigo is an Ayurvedic herb used in the management of visha (poison) and its rela... more Neeli or Indian indigo is an Ayurvedic herb used in the management of visha (poison) and its related conditions. Many references regarding the visha hara (anti-toxic) property of the drug is available in the classics. It forms the ingredient of various Agada yogas (formulations for the treatment of poison and toxic conditions) and other commonly practiced formulations. In addition to the brihat trayis (three main treatise in Ayurveda classics), the drug is frequently mentioned in Keraleeya visha chikitsa granthas (Classic books followed in Kerala for the treatment of poisonous conditions) like Prayogasammucchayam, Kriyakaoumudi, Kodasherymargam etc which highlights its potency and the important role played by Neeli even in the management of high potent poisons like mandali visha (viper bite). Proper evaluation of the drug and its properties with genuine research studies may help practitioners of Agadatantra to tackle the innumerable ailments arising due to exposure to various toxins, seen in the present era, with a better and cost effective treatment. In this article, an attempt is made to throw light on the significance of the anti toxic property of the drug Neeli and its potency in treating various poisonous conditions including snake bites.
