Hello everyone!
I'm new to this community and yup, i used to do hiphop for a few years and quit dancing for about a year and recently i started out latin dancing. hahas, its great and i love dancing to bits like you guys(: I love salsa too and i hope that i can learn it too! Can anyone tell me the difference between salsa and latin? I'm sooooo new to it. oh wells, But currently i am still searching for dancing shoes and i was wondering, is it true that i have to get shoes that are actually smaller than my feet to get a firmer grip and what inch is recomended? Oh! and i am really in love with ballet too, though i totally have no background and i am as inflexible as a rigid pole hahas! well, thats about all the random parts about me hahas! oh, i'm 18 by the way! Great meeting you guys! (:
oh! and i do wish to learn salsa at home if possible! Suggestions anyone?!

Could you recommend me free sites to download salsa-music?

Hi Everyone!
I am new to this group and I just thought I'd say hello. I started salsa dancing about a year ago and although I haven't had the opportunity to do it that much I love it. I think it became a part of my life because of the influence from some latin friends. Anyways, I went to Honduras about 5 years ago and I've been in love with latin culture ever since then. I love the music, the people, the dances...they are all filled with such passion. Well now that I've said all that I should probably introduce myself. I'm Nicole and I'm 23 years old. Oh and by the way...don't ask me to translate anything because even-though I took 4 semesters of spanish I definitly did not master the language. I am still learning...one day I hope to understand that I'm singing along to...and yes I'm sure I'm butchering the language. But it is fun to try anyway...I have a lot of respect for people who can speak 2nd languages well!

Hi there,
This group seems to be a great lover of Latin dancing.
I am an indian (from india) graduate student of UOM - twin cities, who has happened to get to like a woman who loves spanish music and latin dancing. Thought that someone from this group, in fact people like you all who are so passionate about salsa and merengue, would help me out by teaching me how to dance?
Anybody who can take up the challenge to teach a guy with 2 left feet latin dancing?

Any recommendations for good salsa teachers in the Mpls area? I know some basic moves, but would like to improve and expand my dancing.

Here is a recap of last weeks activites:
Tuesday night we headed out to Famous Dave's. Many people were there, and Salsa Sensation was rockin' with their standard Salsa tunes. They also had a little Cumbia and Merengue in there. The dance instructor of the evening gave the longest first lesson I have ever seen. I was with the crowd of other excited salsa students because my friend Filiberto had never learned salsa, and he really wanted someone to learn with him that night. So we had the lesson, and at the end the instructor showed us a turn, which everyone had a hard time doing.
After the lesson I spoke with Roberto, my current salsa instructor, and he and I joked about the other instructor trying to teach everyone a turn......."If you teach them a turn here, that's one paid lesson you loose money on!" We laughed.
All in all Famous Dave's was a pretty good time, but Thursday was better.
Thursday I was on a mission to go to First Avenue. Three of us went together for "Ritmos Internacionale", otherwise known as latin dance night at First Ave. Cover is free for people with College IDs (that's me!) and 5.00 otherwise. When we walked in, there was Yellow Submarine on the video screens. I was in dancing heaven. We checked our coats, purchased some refreshing beverages, and got out there on the dance floor! There was some salsa, merengue, and a particular set of cumbia music that I am on a quest for. It was kinda surf guitar/electronica with cumbia rythmns. It was fantastic!
We ran into Roberto, and then he was on the dance floor the rest of the evening. The other exciting event of the evening was Jorge, who was quite the aggressive Merengue dance partner. Attempting the merengue defensive move was useless to his death hand grip, and hip gyrations. It is funny now, but I don't think it was so funny to Lisa! :o)
Saturday night I received a call from Matt in my Spanish class.......he was going to be out at Minneapolis Cafe, and suggested I meet them there! Well, one phone call to Richard and we were ready for dancing! We made it out to Minneapolis Cafe, found parknig across the street, and enjoyed the free coat check. At 9:30 it wasn't very busy, only a few on the dance floor. The live band with almost the same members as Salsa Sensation was playing their usual, but I think they sounded a little better inside Minneapolis Cafe. Steve and his sister Mickey were there, which was a nice suprise. We only danced a few songs, then sat at the bar, oblivious to the growing number of people on the dance floor. By 10pm, it was packed. We stayed until 10:30, then left to check out First Avenue.
First Avenue on Saturday night was slow at 10:30, but by midnight it was very crowded, with a very sticky dance floor. I don't like it when heavily intoxicated people bring their beverages on the dance floor, and proceed to spill it more than drink it. The music by the end of the evening definately had a latin feel to it......we even tried to do a little salsa and merengue here and there! I would love a latin techno CD like the music late on Saturday night.
Phew! What a week of dancing! I loved all the different types of salsa music that I heard this past week! It was so much fun!
