_1:09 am_[zacharyisageek] I've just gotten home from seeing Islaja, Lau Nau, Tomutonttu, and Kuupuu. Minus it being hot and there being a table of annoying people in front of us, it was a very good show. The first band was from Providence and I can't remember their name. It was noise that went nowhere, so it didn't keep my attention for too long. Kuupuu played next and it was interesting to see her add each instrument one by one to the songs. I have no idea which two songs she played, but they were both very good. Tomutonttu, Jan from Kemialliset Ystävät's solo project, was okay-but more something I'd rather listen to recorded than performed live, as watching a guy sit on the floor twisting knobs isn't all that exciting. Lau Nau played next and had the best set of the night. Laura sang well and Pekko Käppi played with her, which was the best part of the show. The best song they played was "Pyhä Vuori." Laura played a keyboard while she, Pekko, and the other guy (I don't know his name) harmonized vocals. Islaja's set was short, only about thirty minutes, but it was interesting. I wasn't expecting a bass player. I expected her to play guitar and sing, or for there to be a guitar player allowing her to play the "weird" instruments. She played guitar for half the songs, and on the others played either a melodica, shakers, or recorders. When the bass player wasn't playing the bass he played bells and in the last song played a cross-cut saw with a bow. Although I like Islaja's sound on her records more, it was still interesting and good to see her live. I bought the Kuupuu 'Kulta Sulka' CDR and the Lau Nau CDR, both special releases, I believe only sold on the tour. The Lau Nau CDR has the best packaging-the CD is in a white bag folded and slipped in a plastic case with a stick in the fold of the bag. There is a link to showdates on the Fonal site, if any of you live in the US anywhere near any of these places I'd recommend seeing the show if you can.EDIT: I forgot to add that for one Islaja song, the percussion was taken care of by a motorized stuffed bunny toy that banged on a drum. _10:28 am_[zacharyisageek] I've just joined this community, as I've just recently found it. I've been interested in Finnish psych-folk since last year when I bought Kiila's Silmät Sulkaset and a Pekko Käppi 3". My collection of Finnish and other forms of experimental folk has grown since then, much to my liking.I look forward to conversing with you. (4 Comments |Comment on this)

_1:53 pm_[dropandroll] Digging the Inca Ore eva and oranjy**Eva Saelens and feline friend, Oranjy.**Although this artist is not Finnish, she may well be of interest to members here.Eva Saelens professes the desire to create a music that in its wild femininity seems both “hunted and extinct already.” With Inca Ore, her solo project, she explores the aerobic possibilities of the human voice – the place in which mind and body meet - conjuring worlds of tranced murmur, incantatory chant and otherly caterwaul to an accompaniment of primal backwoods thrum and thrift-shop percussion. Her approach to the voice recalls Christina Carter’s wordless sustains, or Jeanne Lee’s breathy improvisations, but, although equally ecstatic, considered use of multi-tracking allows her to explore further realms of slurred harmony and microtonal pulse. You can read an interview with Eva Saelens at notusualmusiceva and oranjyInca Ore's Brute Nature vs Wild Magic is available now (Collective Jyrk, CD-R) in an edition of 100 copies. _10:38 am_[dropandroll] Kuupuu Does anyone have images of the handmade covers to Kuupuu's 'Illusia' 7", just out on Time-Lag? The handmade covers were limited (how many?) and were gone in an eye-blink. (Comment on this)

_3:12 pm_[dropandroll] Hi there. I'm new to this community, as well as to livejournal in general. I love nearly all the music you list in your interests. I was lucky enough to see hertta lussu Ässä when they toured the UK a month or two ago. Do they have any recordings available? My usual suppliers in the UK are Volcanic Tongue and Boa Melody Bar, but they have nothing on their catalogues. Can I also direct members of this community to my new journal dropandroll? The community notusualmusic also provides a forum for the discussion all types of non-mainstream music, including Finnish psych or free-folk. It would really benefit from your involvement! As I said, I'm new to the whole livejournal thing, so apologies if this breaks any kind of etiquette! (Comment on this)
