The objective of this study was to assess objectivity in TV news coverage of stories on CCM and CUF on Muafaka by the Star TV. The study was guided by the following research questions: What was the balance in the presentation of the Muafaka debate as covered on Star TV? What amount of time was given by Star TV to the different actors in the Muafaka debate? How was the camera used in the coverage of Muafaka debate by the Star TV? How was the language used in the coverage of Muafaka debate by the Star TV?
This study was guided by the Westestahl’s model which views objectivity in its factuality and impartiality and Democtratic theory of Media which is based on the idea that ethical journalism is vital in facilitating democracy especially when the media need to take a neutral position in its coverage.
The study used content analysis in analyzing the Muafaka (reconciliation) between Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and Civic United Front (CUF) newscasts of Star television.
The research revealed that Star TV coverage of muafaka newscasts was not objective. This is because there was no balance of viewpoints and the amount of time given to different sides. Also, there was no balance in amount of time given to different actors.
The study also revealed that there was biasness in the way the camera was used to tell the stories. CCM was covered mostly with medium shots while CUF got more of long shots. Medium and close shots are meant to reveal more information and to help the viewer concentrate on the image and content while long shot are meant as establishing shots.
