The effects of daily photoperiod and light intensity on the uptake of radiophosphorus by Chrysant... more The effects of daily photoperiod and light intensity on the uptake of radiophosphorus by Chrysanthemum morifolium ’Princess Anne’ and Pelargonium hortorum ’Irene’ were studied in controlled-environment rooms. The rate of P32 uptake by both species increased with increasing photoperiod over the range 9, 14, and 19 hr per day at an intensity of 1,000 ft-c. The rate of P32 uptake was higher when the 9- and 14-hr photoperiods were started 7 days prior to the application of P32 than when started concurrently with the application of P32. Plants of each species exposed to a 19-hr photoperiod had the same rate of P32 uptake regardless of when the photoperiod was started. There was a progressive increase in the rate of P32 uptake by both species with increasing light intensity over the range of 500, 1,000, and 1,500 ft-c at a daily photoperiod of 17 hr. It is suggested that increased P32 uptake with increased photoperiod and light intensity is related to increased supply of the photosynthate....

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) supplementation ... more This study was conducted to investigate the effect of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) supplementation into BioXcell® extender on the quality of frozen-thawed bull semen. Twenty four ejaculates were collected using an electro ejaculator from 3 bulls 8 per bull. Ejaculates with motility ≥70%, normal morphology and viability ≥80% were extended into BioXcell® extender, to which 0 (control), 3,5,10,15 ng/ml of DHA were added. The supplemented semen samples were incubated at 37oC for 15 minutes for DHA uptake by sperm. Later, samples were cooled for 2 hours at 5oC and packaged into 0.25ml straws and frozen in liquid nitrogen for 24hours. Subsequently, straws were thawed and evaluated for total sperm motility (computer assisted semen analysis), membrane functional integrity (Hypo-osmotic swelling test), viability (eosin-nigrosin), and lipid peroxidation (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, TBARS). Sperm motility (48.94±0.8) was significantly (P<0.05) higher at 3ng/ml whereas normal morphology (67.84±1.5), viability (71.94±2.4), acrosome integrity (75.52±0.8) and membrane integrity (71.36±2.3) produced higher values at 3ng/ml but were not significant (P>0.05) with 5ng/ml. DHA was significantly higher in supplemented groups than control. Lipid peroxidation showed a trend of increment with linear to increment in DHA supplementation. Overall results showed that 3ng/ml DHA to BioXcell® improved frozen-thawed quality of bull sperm.
