There he gives a somewhat odd general methodological consideration of the relation between philosophy and history in order to explain his own procedure in exploring irony in different historical contexts. This paper claims that his elusive comments here make sense when read against the background of Hegel s famous introduction to the Lectures on the Philosophy of History. While Kierkegaard is known for his passionate criticism of the abstraction of speculative philosophy, here, by contrast, he seems to affirm his appreciation for speculative philosophy s ability to avoid abstraction and capture the truth of actuality. Thus, in his methodological considerations at the outset of the work, he seems to say that he will attempt a kind of Hegelian philosophy of history as he traces the historical mutations of the concept of irony.

This is a complex issue that concerns both the “Religion” chapter of the Phenomenology of Spirit and the Berlin Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion. At first, an account is given of how Hegel understands phenomenology. Then this is used as the basis for an evaluation of his analyses of religion in the Phenomenology and the Lectures. The thesis is that these two analyses, although separated by many years, in fact show clear signs of methodological continuity and can indeed be regarded as phenomenological at least on Hegel’s own definition. This reading offers us a way to resolve the long-standing problem of whether the Phenomenology of Spirit can be seen as a genuinely unified text. Moreover, it shows the little-recognized connection between Hegel’s early philosophy of religion and his later philosophy of religion from his Berlin lectures.

One obvious reason for this is his rejection of abstraction and system-building and his insistence on the sphere of existence and actuality. What is interesting about this criticism is that it seems, at least in part, to be inspired by another German idealist, namely Schelling. This paper explores this criticism and attempts to come to terms with its implications.

his opponents. One of his favorite targets was the poet, dramatist, and philosopher, Johan Ludvig Heiberg (1791–1860). Perhaps the best-known element of his critique was Heiberg’s outspoken Hegelian campaign. Before Kierkegaard’s famous criticisms of Heiberg, he learned the craft of literary polemics by reading the lively discussions in the Danish journals of the time. In this article it is argued that the role of the journal Kjøbenhavnsposten for Kierkegaard has never been appreciated. This journal was edited by Andreas Peter Liunge (1798–1879), who was a great adversary of Heiberg and his Kjøbenhavns flyvende Post. The article shows that the often satirical use of Hegel by Kjøbenhavnsposten to criticize Heiberg anticipates Kierkegaard’s strategy of critique with regard to Heiberg and other figures in the Danish Hegelian movement

Today we know this, for example, in the conflict between analytic and Continental philosophy. The present paper focuses on one episode in this conflict. Kierkegaard is well-known for his critical view of how the speculative thinker forgets his own existence, while neglecting or misunderstanding actuality. One of his purported criticisms of Hegelian philosophy is that it is overly abstract and thus fails to capture “actuality” or “existence.” I argue that the young Kierkegaard in fact is not a critic of Hegel’s abstraction at all but, on the contrary, an advocate of it. This is demonstrated by an analysis of his early works From the Papers of One Still Living and The Concept of Irony as well as his reading of Hegel’s Lectures on Aesthetics.

It is argued that this text illustrates Kierkegaard’s special way of presenting his ideas. The discourse is interdisciplinary with elements of literature, philosophy, and theology. But this is not to say that it is a literary, philosophical, or theological work. Rather, it is a combination of all these that defies categorization in the conventional genres. Moreover, it is argued that an important part of Kierkegaard’s way of writing in “At a Graveside” is connected to his well-known emulation of Socrates.

The latter criticized Hegel’s philosophy for being overly abstract and having lost touch with reality. Kierkegaard is given credit for this criticism and for establishing a new philosophical direction that rejects abstraction and focuses on the concrete experience of the individual. The present article argues that there was nothing particularly new about Kierkegaard’s rejection of abstract philosophy and his attempt to emphasize actuality and life. In fact, the conflict was wider and extended to many other Danish thinkers at the time who were critical of precisely this point in Hegel.

There have been a number of works that seek inspiration on this issue from the philosophy of Hegel. Usually, the primary focus of these works has, naturally enough, been the main statement of Hegel's political philosophy, the Philosophy of Right. Scholars go to this work in search of a principle that can ground human rights in such a way that can be meaningfully used in a political and legal context. This body of literature is important in that it draws attention to this aspect of Hegel's thought and shows how it is relevant for a problem of some topicality today. However, this approach, I wish to argue, takes up the issue at a fairly advanced stage in Hegel's thinking and fails to see some much more fundamental elements in his way of understanding the concept of human rights, specifically, that the very idea of human rights presupposes a philosophical anthropology and a theory of history since human rights as a concept did not always exist. These aspects of Hegel's theory have been generally neglected in the secondary literature on the issue of human rights.

One key element which separates Christianity from the other religions, for Hegel, concerns the issue of alienation. He claims that the previous religions all contain some form of alienation, which can be found in their conceptions of the divine. I wish to examine Hegel's view that Christianity alone overcomes religious alienation. What is it that makes Christianity so special in this regard? This is a particularly important issue given that the question of alienation is so central in the post-Hegelian thinkers such as Feuerbach, Bauer, and Marx, who all insist that, far from overcoming alienation, Christianity is guilty of causing it. I argue that this issue provides new insight into the old criticism of Hegel as a thinker of abstraction.
