One such problem/condition has been termed spiritual emergence 2. Objectives: This case study explored the role of dreams and images in spiritual emergence processes. Methods: Methodology involved a single case study and a literature review. Sources of data included six cases, reduced to three that exemplified contemporary experiences of spiritual emergence and/or spiritual emergency, and further limited to a single case due to space constraints. Similarities and differences between the case and literature were used in interpreting the role of dreams and dream-like experiences in spiritual emergence processes. Data spanned written, semi-structured interviews, published literature, historical documents, biographical narratives, and content analysis. Analysis included thematic, conceptual, and descriptive methods. Comparison of the case with findings from the literature review helped identify and validate various roles of dreams and images. Results: A primary role of dreams and images in spiritual emergence seems to be to act as signs, with secondary roles as providing direction, or at least information. Discussion: Implications of the findings are supportably applicable to spiritually emerging populations and to therapy where dream work is used.

The purpose of this essay is to review the Grofs' model of spiritual emergencies. The authors ask: Has the model been useful for identifying and treating psycho-spiritual distress? Should it be amended? Spiritual emergency can be defined as a crisis involving religious, transpersonal, and/or spiritual issues that provides opportunities for growth. Spiritual emergence, meanwhile, lends itself to gentler transformation. The research methods include an archival literature review triangulated with an authoritative interview. The findings are that the Grofs' model of spiritual emergencies was ahead of its time and that the medical establishment needs to catch up. Adaptations and revisions that expand and refine it could help bring acceptance and further application of this useful model to people in psycho-spiritual crises.

Shamanic rituals typically consist of induction, deepening, suggestion, and enactment, the same stages that characterize most forms of
contemporary hypnosis. Shamans claim to obtain information in ways not typically available to their peers, such as “visions” and “journeys.” They
use this information to help and to heal community members. Tribal members who did not respond to the shaman’s treatment may have lacked
the ability to mobilize their self-healing processes, thus their genes would rarely be passed down to future generations. Contemporary humans are
able to respond to placebos, suggestion, imagination, hypnotic induction, and other adaptive traits that had their origins in prehistoric shamanism.
