Summary

Jason Blum promises edginess and originality in Blumhouse's upcoming Spawn adaptation. Blumhouse has been kicking around ideas for a Spawn movie for years, actively developing the script. Recently, Blum has said that fans could see Spawn grace the silver screen as soon as 2025, but he has remained tight-lipped on what to expect from the movie itself.

During a press line for Blumhouse at New York Comic Con 2023, Blum spoke about Spawn. He dropped a few more hints about the highly anticipated movie, including what it will bring to the superhero genre that is uniquely Blumhouse. Blum promised this will feel like a Blumhouse superhero movie with edginess and originality. Check out Blum's full quote below:

Jason Blum: Yes, I'm going to bring the Blumhouse edge. It's going to be edgy and original as compared to other superhero movies. It's gonna definitely feel like the Blumhouse version of a superhero movie.

Blumhouse Brings Edgy Horror To The Superhero Genre With Spawn

Spawn in Killadelphia Comic Art

Spawn creator Todd McFarlane has been heavily involved with the project since day one, working on the script and, at one point, being expected to direct the adaptation. He also announced that Jamie Foxx would be playing the lead character, Al Simmons, aka Spawn. It also seems the Spawn script was nearly complete before the strike and could be completed sooner than expected now that a deal has been reached between the AMTPT and the WGA. In the comics, Al Simmons becomes an assassin for the US government after serving with Force Recon as a Marine and the Secret Service before being recruited to the CIA.

Simmons is betrayed by his agency and killed by his partner, being burned to death and sent to Hell, where he makes a deal with the devil, Malebolgia, to become a hellspawn. He returns to the land of the living and becomes an anti-hero after searching for a new purpose as he tries to delay his eventual return to hell. With Blumhouse at the helm, Spawn can fully lean into the horror aspects of adapting the comics while also bringing edginess to the action.

Spawn is an opportunity for the superhero genre to move beyond the formula of the MCU and DCU, fully diving into the more horror-inspired elements. Projects like The Boys and Invincible have taken a new approach to the superhero genre, but Spawn could bring out the horror in a way that opens the door to more genre experimentation with these projects. Blum's excitement to bring something fresh to this genre could revitalize the originality of what superheroes can be on the big screen.
