Reviews_(4)_
- “The Nun” plunges viewers into one of the darkest and most atmospheric chapters of The Conjuring universe, exploring the terrifying origins of the demon Valak. Set in a remote Romanian abbey, the film delivers an unsettling blend of gothic horror, eerie silence, and sudden, heart-stopping scares. Corin Hardy masterfully builds a relentless sense of dread, turning every corridor, candlelight, and shadow into a threat. The performances—especially the confrontation between faith and evil—add depth and intensity to the story. For fans of supernatural horror, “The Nun” is a chilling, visually striking experience that sets the stage for even greater terror in its sequel. Though it's a little bit boring compared to the nun 2 but it's a nice horror movie
- The Nun expands the Conjuring universe by diving into the dark origins of Valak, the demon that haunts several films in the franchise. The movie follows a priest and a young novice sent by the Vatican to investigate a mysterious death inside a remote Romanian abbey. From the opening scene, the film leans heavily into atmosphere to dim corridors, ancient relics, and a constant feeling that something unseen is watching.
What The Nun does best that I noticed is visual tension. The cinematography uses shadows and silence to create jump-scares that feel earned, not forced. Bonnie Aarons’ portrayal of the demon nun remains one of the franchise's strongest and most unsettling images. The story itself is straightforward, sometimes predictable, but the gothic setting and the haunting sound design keep the film engaging.
Where the movie struggles is in pacing. Some scenes stretch longer than they need to, and a few side characters feel underdeveloped. But the film still succeeds as a supernatural horror entry because of its mood, its world-building, and the way it connects to the larger Conjuring timeline.
Overall, The Nun is a visually strong, atmospheric horror movie that relies on mood rather than complexity. Fans of the franchise will appreciate the lore, while casual viewers will still get a solid dose of tension and scares.
- I have seen a lot of horror movies, but The Nun unfortunately bored me. Its hour-and-a-half-long plot felt like it dragged on for much longer than that and even the jumpscares were not enough to rouse me from my state of boredom.
- I love horror and I love the Conjuring Universe movies especially, but this one just didn't do it. I saw it at a drive-in initially and couldn't see most of it because it was so dark, so I tried watching again and nope. This movie was still so dark 90% of the time. The setting also was just generally kind of boring and despite the wonderful acting of the main cast, the story just fell flat. I also find that this kind of blurred a weird line between hauntings and monster movies. The Nun was almost less scary because we saw so much of her that it really ruined the effect. That being said, the sequel is 100x better, so I'd still recommend this one for context.
