With audiences excited about its recent renewal order, creator Steve Blackman has explained The Umbrella Academy season 3's Ben post-credits scene. Justin H. Min brings life (and death) to two different versions of Ben Hargreeves, alongside co-stars Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, and Elliot Page. Min portrays a ghostly version of Ben in seasons 1 and 2 due to an accident that happened prior to the events of the show, and while Ben of the Umbrella Academy has a relatively introverted personality, his season 3 self, Sparrow Ben, differs greatly.

As seen in The Umbrella Academy season 3, in an alternate future where the Umbrella Academy never existed, a very snarky, very alive version of Ben leads the Sparrow Academy for an entirely different group of Hargreeves siblings. Molded by a much stricter upbringing, Min created a version of Ben that fans love to hate. After the shocking events of the season 3 finale, where the now-powerless siblings parted ways, audiences were treated to a post-credit scene that saw a version of Ben on the subway in Korea, resulting in a flood of questions from fans as they theorized which version of Ben was on the train and what was he doing there.

In honor of the show's season 4 renewal, Steve Blackman spoke to Netflix Tudum to discuss The Umbrella Academy and its season 3 post-credits scene. The creator confirmed that the Ben seen on the train is the Sparrow Ben and on hints that what Ben is doing in Korea is much more pertinent. Though he doesn’t give much away, Blackman does point out some details from the post-credit scene before giving a reminder that everything in The Umbrella Academy has a meaning. See what Blackman teased below:

Let’s be clear — that is Sparrow Ben. The question you should really be asking yourself is what the f--k is he doing on a Korean subway train reading a book about pottery? Odd, right? Of course, it is! This is the Umbrella Academy. As every good Umbrella fan knows, no moment in the show exists in isolation. Everything we see has meaning. And this moment is no exception. Ben has a reason to be there… but you’ll have to wait until Season 4 to understand why.

Justin H Min as Ben Hargreeves The Sparrow Academy Number One The Umbrella Academy

The final moments of The Umbrella Academy season 3 have already given audiences some idea of what to expect from season 4, with Reginald Hargreeves set up to be one of the season's ultimate villains. Now powerless in the timeline that Reginald tried to reset, the odds seem stacked against the Umbrella Academy, but Blackman seems confident that the dysfunctional family are up for the challenge. With The Umbrella Academy season 4 set to conclude the show, it will be interesting to see what other enemies they will face.

Though Blackman doesn’t give away why Ben is in Korea or how he got there, this at least sheds light on some unanswered questions from The Umbrella Academy season 3. While Ben’s new look and seemingly calmer demeanor from the post-credit scene’s brief glimpse at the character initially hinted at an alternate Ben, Blackman’s reveal brings about more questions about how and why Ben is in Korea with a newfound interest in pottery. Unfortunately, audiences will just have to wait until The Umbrella Academy season 4 is released to get some real answers.
