Ambiguous loss theory offers a conceptual framework to understand these experiences as losses of relationships, stability, and social validation due to parental behaviors. Theoretically and culturally informed interventions are needed to help adolescents cope with ambiguous loss. This article describes a psychoeducational group intervention for female African American adolescents experiencing ambiguous loss that aims to promote resilience and coping rather than promote closure following loss.

Understanding the perspectives of African American female counselor educators requires the consideration of several dimensions of self, including age, culture, gender, religion, educational background, socioeconomic status, and life orientation. This confluence of race, ethnicity, and gender powerfully influences an individual's life, yet it is a difficult task to understand which of these exerts the most powerful influence on African American women (Pack-Brown, Whittington-Clark, & Parker, 2002). Indeed, a Black feminist theoretical paradigm asserts that race, class, gender, and colorism (discussed later in article) greatly affect the lives of

Internal consistency estimates were adequate (α coefficients above .70) for all measures, and evidence of convergent and discriminant validity was found. Confirmatory factor analyses failed to replicate the hypothesized factor structures of these measures. Exploratory factor analyses indicated that 4 factors found for the Sociocultural Attitudes Toward Appearance Questionnaire were similar to the hypothesized subscales, with fewer items. The factors found for the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire-Appearance Scales and the Body Dissatisfaction subscale of the Eating Disorders Inventory-3 were not similar to the subscales developed by the scale authors. Validity and reliability evidence is discussed for the new factors.
