Underwater Archaeology

zen_pirate Apr. 17th, 2006 09:42 pmHey all, I'm wanting to get into East Carolina University to study maritime history and underwater archaeology. I graduated with a BA in English last year and have had an internship with an underwater archaeology company, and am also scuba certified...I was wondering if anyone has gotten their masters from this school, and if so, how difficult is it to get into the program? Any suggestions are more than welcome.8 comments - Leave a commentPrevious Entry Flag Next Entry

what underwater archaeology company did u get ur internship through? i know a few who are getting there masters there

I can't answer any of those questions. However my professor got his masters there, and I have dove with some of the profesors there. They seem highly expirienced.

I'm looking at grad schools myself. I looked at East Carolina and it just didn't impress me as much as Texas A&M did. East Carolina would be an easier choice for me. Not as competitive and closer to home. But this is grad school we're talking about. I've noticed that nobody really gives a rip where you got your BA. But where you went to grad school seems to make a big difference in the world of archaeology.

Thanks for your responses. The reason I'm interested in ECU is because they focus on the shipwrecks in the timeperiods and the places that I'm most interested in, whereas at A&M (and I could be mistaken), they focused a lot on ancient shipwrecks. Yeah, I know where you got your B.A. doesn't play much into admittance, nor does your major play too...well...majorly, but I just wanted to ask in case anyone had experience with that school.

I did my internship with HRD, Inc based out of Ft. Pierce in Florida. They used to be a treasure hunting company back in the 80's but saw the light and have turned towards archaeology - the lead archaeologist there went to ECU, so it was helpful talking to him about it too.

I actually live about 5 hours west from ECU and thought about attending for my BA. I decided on mountains rather than beach though and so I'm sticking it out at appstate.edu. My parents don't live too far from there, though, so if you plan on driving up (I'm guessing you're in FL, since that was where your internship was) let me know. I've been interested in checking out the grad school program as well as the campus and all, so I'd love to join you.

What time periods are you looking at?

Actually I'm all the way up in Indiana right now, so I have no immediate plans to visit the campus (tho I most definately will before applying).

I'm interested in wrecks along the New England/southern coast, from the time periods of about the sixteenth century through present. The history of the Florida coasts fascinates me, as does the maritime history of the Carolinas and the New England coast. How about you all?

Hi, did my BA at A&M and my master's is almost done at ECU, if you still have questions, drop me a line.
