In the case of an ancient work, in the absence of written evidence, the determination of its meaning and value as a visual object depends on what we can see. An iconographic analysis by interpreting the relationship between form and meaning emphasized by Panofsky, who has made important contributions to the interpretation of the visual arts, is extremely important in the evaluation of ancient works of art, especially sculpture (Panofsky 2012: 25-37). According to this method, it becomes imperative to first investigate the periods in which the image of “old age” is seen prominently and the meaning it represents.
In our study, after a brief evaluation of the phenomenon of old age in ancient societies, it would be appropriate to look at how the image of old age created by these cultures is constructed in the context of sculpture art.

The repertoire consist of lekythoi, kraters, hydria, lebetes and pelikes, which are the forms commonly used in the Black Sea
region. Some of these, depicting wedding scenes, Dionysiac play, Eros and Aphrodite and palmette motifs evoke the style of the
Meidias Painter; the other scenes and figures depicted on the collection are: Amazon and griffin, eros and maenad, siren, Satyr,
crawling baby and one animal. The aim of this paper is to introduce the iconographical motifs and scenes of daily life which were
widely used in the Black Sea region on red-figure vases and to illuminate Sinope’s cultural and commercial relations with Athens
through these ceramics. The publication of red-figure pottery from Sinope is intended as a contribution to the documentation
of the nature and pattern of red-figured vases of the Black Sea region.

Anatolia, the center of the coastal strip of southern Black Sea. This city that was established as a colony of
Miletus was uninterruptedly used as a settlement in the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman period.
Therefore, rich stele collection of Sinop Archeology Museum manifestly shows the existence of the stele
production since the Archaic period without any interruption. The earliest relief samples of a large number
of Sinope tomb monument unearthed was processed in the stele form. The stele that was brought in the
museum collection via the grant in 2013 and is the subject of our paper is a new sample added into the
early stele group. There is a composition with two figures on the rectangle stele. The figure area is limited
by a frame. Figures are processed by the silhouette technique as in other early period steles of Sinope. Six
lines of inscription are under the figure area. This stele is dated to the Early Classical period as a result of
the comparison and evaluations made in terms of the stylistics features, artistry quality, and inscription.
A large number of steles found in Sinope and show the same superficial style and other similar samples
found in close regions indicate the presence of a typical local workshop.

Rich funerary stele collection of Sinop Archeological Museum manifests the existence of stele producing since Archaic Period uninterruptedly. Unfortunately, Sinope stelae have not been published as of yet except first samples dated in Late Archaic and Classical Periods. The subject of this study is about two funerary stelae which are found in Sinop and around and belong to Hellenistic Period. The stelae are called as Sabeinos and Straton(?) based on their fencible inscriptions. There is “dexiosis” scene on both stelae which are both placed in the group of naiskos stelae. Figurative compositions were preferred for both steles. A small sized servant figure was additionally added nearby woman figure on Straton(?) Stele. When analyzing compositions and figures in scene part of stelae, understood that these two stelae were produced in the same atelier, in close periods even not by the same artist in terms of workmanship and style characteristics. There could be correlated closer with Byzantion stelae as style and subject much as the effect of Smyrna stelae are denser. In the light of stylistics comparisons, Sabeinos Stele must be made the first half of the second century B.C., Straton(?) Stele must be done before in the midst of the second century B.C.

One of the main reasons of that is economic difficulties accompanied by uncertainties originating from the unsteady political structure of the period. These conditions majorly prevented the cities to continue their art activities as before and produce new artworks. The portrait found at the Agora of ancient city Iassos, one of important cities of Karia Region, is important in terms of the enhancement of Anatolian Roman Republican period portrait repertoire. Iassos falls within the limited number of portraits showing “classicistic” characteristics among eclectic character of Roman Republican period portraits.

Cultural interactions stemming from the expansionist politics of the Romans can be observed as stylistic characteristics in Roman Republican portraits. Portraits which are found in Asia Minor, very few in quantity, reflect the general characteristics of the Roman Republican Period. Although most of these Asia Minor-produced portraits reflect the lingering effects of western Asia Minor Hellenistic tradition, there are some portraits of individuals, which can be termed “veristic”. These “veristic” portraits are the subject of this paper. Previously published portraits which belong to this group are re-evaluated in the light of new information and information about unpublished portraits is presented as contribution to the literature.

in the center of the southern Black Sea coastal strip. It is stated in the ancient sources that
Sinope was established as a colony of Miletos in the later 8th century BC. After the Lydians
defeated the Cimmerians, Miletus attempted to establish its colonies and Sinope was reestablished by the Miletians after the middle of the 7th century BC. Then, in the Hellenistic
Period, Sinope was also affected by the intense hellenization that started with the campaigns
of Alexander the Great, and first Antigonos and then Seleukos dominated the region. Sinope,
which was included in the territory of the Kingdom of Pontus, founded by Mithridates in 183
BC, has been settled continuously since the Archaic Period. There are lamps belonging to the
Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine Periods in the collection of Sinop
Museum. Most of them have been purchased or confiscated, as well as scientific
archaeological excavations. In this study, it will be tried to show the Archaic and Classical
Period lamps and their origins. The earliest example among them is an open oil lamp which is
probably dated to the last quarter of the 7th century BC. The following examples are dated to
the Archaic Period, show a profile with an open body and a bridged nozzle. These lamps are
dated between the second half of the 6th century BC and 480, according to the Attic
chronology. Sinope examples are also similar to the Ephesian finds which are dated to the last
quarter of the 7th century BC, and this date coincides with the colonization date of Sinope.

Sinope owes its natural harbor to be the most important stop of the east-west strait in the southern shoreline of the Black Sea, which has a challenging geography. Being this city almost right across the Crimea Peninsula enables for Sinop to play a significant role in transportation and trade between the Crimea Peninsula and Anatolia.
Sinope was a settlement also in the periods of Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman without any interruption. The city was an important seaport where the commercial products could be transferred by water from territorial enclaves to the Black Sea during and after the Persian domination.
Not only the sculptor artifacts but also the candles (oil-lamp) found in Sinop Museum and several excavations around Sinop display the relationship network between the regions mentioned and the important countries in the same area. The general run of these candles found in Sinop Museum is dated to Hellenistic Period as well as reach from the Classical Period to the midst of Late Roman Period. They were made of cogwheel and molding as the characteristics of the period. There are materials in them that reflect the trade network of the time and show the commercial and cultural interaction with Western Anatolia, North Africa, and the Southern Black Sea.

Sinope’den Erken Klasik Döneme Ait Bir Mezar Steli

Cultural interactions stemming from the expansionist politics of the Romans can be observed as stylistic characteristics in Roman Republican portraits. Portraits which are found in Asia Minor, very few in quantity, reflect the general characteristics of the Roman Republican Period. Although most of these Asia Minor-produced portraits reflect the lingering effects of western Asia Minor Hellenistic tradition, there are some portraits of individuals, which can be termed "veristic". These "veristic" portraits are the subject of this paper. Previously published portraits which belong to this group are re-evaluated in the light of new information and information about unpublished portraits is presented as contribution to the literature.
