The third season of Sex Education consists of eight episodes. It was officially announced on February 10, 2020[1][2] and was released on September 17, 2021.[3]

The third season takes place in September and October 2021, half a year after season 2's storyline. It introduces several new characters; Moordale Secondary's new headmistress, who takes over from Mr. Groff, Hope Haddon, a new non-binary student at Moordale Cal Bowman, Michael's arrogant older brother Peter Groff, Elsie's foster mother Anna, Ruby's sick father Roland Matthews, Viv's mysterious boyfriend Eugene, and Lily's mother Carol Iglehart. In addition, the season sees Emily Sands promoted to the main cast.

Synopsis[]

It’s a new year, Otis is having casual sex, Eric and Adam are official, and Jean has a baby on the way. Meanwhile, new headteacher Hope tries to return Moordale to a pillar of excellence, Aimee discovers feminism, Jackson gets a crush and a lost voicemail still looms. Prepare for commitment animals, alien phenomena, vulva cupcakes and much more of Madam Groff.

Production[]

Casting[]

On September 24, 2020, Jason Isaacs, Jemima Kirke and Dua Saleh joined the series cast.[5][6]

Filming[]

The series is reliant on filming during the longer days of British summer, and the sunshine is an important part of its on-screen gloss. The show requires 10 weeks of prep time.[7]

The third season shoot of the series was among the latest UK productions impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Eleven Film was due to go into production on the series in Wales in May 2020, but plans changed amid strict social distancing measures being extended for a least another three weeks.[8] Netflix had a hopeful target of August, 2020 to get the series back into production amid the Coronavirus pandemic, but it wasn't officially as the situation with COVID-19 developed quickly.[7]

On September 9, 2020 Netflix announced that production had resumed in a video post Wednesday on Twitter.[9] It features cast members Gillian Anderson, Asa Butterfield, Chris Jenks, Connor Swindells, JoJo Macari, Tanya Reynolds and Alistair Petrie packing their bags and readjusting to life on the set and life after quarantine.[10]

On March 20, 2021 the filming of season 3 was officially wrapped.

Trivia[]

• Season 3 has the most expansive main cast, compared to other seasons.
• It is the first season where Michael Groff isn't the antagonist.
• It is the first season to feature Ruby's house and family life.
• The season introduces Cal and Layla, the show's first ever non-binary characters.
• It is the first season, where Steve appears in every single episode.
• This is the final season to feature Moordale Secondary School in most of the scenes.
  • In season 4, Moordale Secondary makes just a small cameo in episode 4.5.
• It is the only season that doesn't feature Roz Marchetti.
• The third season is Hope's first and final one.
• Throughout season 3 storyline, there were 6 breakups; Adam & Eric, Cal & Jackson, Maeve & Isaac, Ola & Lily (eventually they made up), Ruby & Otis and Steve & Aimee.
• It is also the final season for some of the main characters, including Olivia Hanan, Anwar Bakshi, Lily Iglehart, Jakob Nyman and Ola Nyman.
