This Master's Degree thesis is an analysis of the economic and cultural history of the Portuguese... more This Master's Degree thesis is an analysis of the economic and cultural history of the Portuguese (mid-sixteenth century) and Dutch (mid-seventeenth century) attempts to monopolize the spice trade (pepper and cinnamon) to Europe, including the impact on and response by the established trading communities in Southern/Western India and Ceylon. lt assesses the efficacy of both nations' strategies and tools to implement and enforce a trade monopoly, and the available mechanisms various actors inside and outside the trading structures established by the official local European entities (Portuguese Estado da Índia and Dutch East lndia Company) applied to violate and circumvent such monopolies. Additionally, it analyzes how these entities interacted with the existing native trading communities in a critical transition phase from mercantilism to early capitalism.
