About us
About CAL Caregivers Alliance Limited (CAL) is a professional non-profit organisation in Singapore dedicated to meeting the needs of caregivers of persons with mental health issues. CAL started operations in April 2012 and its founding members were Singapore Anglican Community Services, Caregivers’ Association of the Mentally Ill and BinjaiTree Limited. CAL’s work includes: o Reaching out to caregivers to provide support and training o Identifying and developing caregiver leaders who can provide peer support o Advocating on behalf of caregivers of persons with mental health issues About Mental Health in Singapore 1 in 7 of those resident in Singapore will suffer from a mental health issue in their lifetime. The most common of these are depression, obsessive compulsive disorders, anxiety disorders, and schizophrenia. Anyone can suffer from a mental health issue, and the economic and social impact in work lost (both for patients and caregivers) and the healthcare costs can be significant. Mental health is an area in need of much more attention. When one suffers from a mental health condition, the primary source of support is often from those closest – usually the family. Nevertheless, because of stigma and public perception, fewer than a third of those affected seek professional help.

- More males are coming forward with their struggles with eating disorders and we're grateful to The Straits Times for telling their stories. “Men may avoid seeking help for an eating disorder because it doesn’t feel manly to be restricting their food choices, and they don’t want to have that feminine label on them. But regardless of your gender, everyone can have the same struggles. Don’t discount your right to struggle just because you don’t fit that gender role”, Yeo Shin Loong urges those suffering to seek help. His father is a recent graduate from CAL's C2C-Eating Disorder (ED) Training Programme. After class, he would share useful knowledge with his wife and son, so that the whole family could support Shin Loong on his recovery journey. Shin Loong shares in the interview, “I’ve learnt that food is not a form of self-control and can be a form of self-love". Get to know Shin Loong's recovery journey here:https://lnkd.in/gXdEHHAQ

- CAL was excited to participate in the Mental Health Film Festival Singapore 2024. This year, we fielded 2 male caregivers to make a statement - that caregiving is everyone's responsibility. 💪 "Ultimately, I'm not a caregiver; I'm a son devoted to my parents. I'll do everything possible to care for them until I can't," Heron Goh.-LLB,MBA(Finance), ASIArb shared at the festival's opening show (Sanctuary: Caring for Yourself When You Care for Others) panel discussion on 7 Nov. 🏡 "We must advocate for mental health without shame," Gabriel Chan said. "My daughter encouraged me to share my story, and I hope you will too. 🫶 By talking openly, we can support those struggling and create a more understanding society," Gabriel was a part of the festival's (Open Door: Is Mental Health really "End-All-Be-All"?) panel on 9 Nov. What a meaningful event made possible by our mental health advocates, volunteers - all caregivers - staff, and supportive friends from the organising committee.

Over 4 lunch-hour breaks 🍽️, the Capital Group associates worked with CAL trainers to equip themselves to care for colleagues experiencing mental health distress. Like proud parents 👏, we were thrilled to hear that CAL's C2B programme had equipped the graduating class of Capital Group associates with the knowledge, attitude and skills to help themselves or their colleagues if the need arises. 🎓 We hope more employers like Capital Group recognise the importance of supporting mental wellness in the workplace and invest in empowering their employees to be mental health champions. 💪🌟 - 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝗚𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝘆! They learned about the different notes in various types of coffee from Starbucks coffee experts and created plant balls to bring home. 🏡 Most importantly, our caregivers enjoyed a break from their caregiving duties, met new friends and explored new interests. Thank you, Starbucks Singapore and Gardens by the Bay, for allowing our caregivers to recharge and carry on. 💪
- "What happens to my loved one when I am no longer around?” This daunting question is ever-present for many caregivers. CAL is fortunate to have caregivers among us who are lawyers by profession. C2C-Dementia graduates Susan Tan and Mylene Chua shared on the legalities surrounding wills, trust funds and deputyships with 30 caregivers on a Saturday morning. The session aimed to enhance caregivers' understanding as they prepare for the future and safeguard their loved ones. Attendees included parents, siblings, and single-child caregivers from various Caregivers-for-Caregivers (C4C) Support Groups. Many wanted to know the difference between a deputyship and a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), raising concerns about the anxiety of preparing for the paperwork, as well as their loved ones’ eligibility for insurance coverage or housing schemes. CAL thanks Susan and Mylene’s colleagues, Sandra and Eileen, for sharing their expertise with our caregivers, and also our staff Karen, Nandita and Loretta for hosting the fruitful session.#CaregiversAllianceLimited #EmpoweringHiddenHeroes

As Yin Feng, who has been in CAL for close to 10 years says, “I find it heartwarming that volunteers sacrifice their time, travelling all the way from east to west 🌍 to help us. This motivates me and I love seeing their personal growth overtime.” Annie, newer to the organisation, adds, “I became a VM as I enjoyed volunteering when I was younger. Now in CAL, it makes me so happy to see caregivers helping others to grow in their caregiving journeys.”😊 Yin Feng and Annie also thank our volunteers and dedicate this trending song to them, hoping that it’ll make their days a little lighter. Most of our volunteers are caregivers themselves and take time out of their busy schedules to advocate for caregiving and mental health in Singapore. Thank you to our VMs and volunteers!🥳 - Happy Deepavali to our caregivers and friends! 🫶 As we celebrate this festival of lights, let's also grow to be a more inclusive community that warmly embraces and supports mental health in Singapore. Wishing you a vibrant and bright holiday ahead. 😊 Love, #YourCALPal
