They risk their lives and freedom to travel to Malaysia illegally through treacherous seas on overloaded wooden boats, often at night and in bad weather condition to avoid detection. Once there, they have to constantly look over their shoulders because any time immigration officials can arrest and deport them. In the third part of a series on migrant workers in Southeast Asia, I spoke to several undocumented workers and examine why they take such risks. For this story, I sailed three times on a small wooden boat through choppy waters, injured myself when a dilapidated makeshift jetty couldn't sustain my 80+kg heft, couldn't find my footings when I tried to disembark and ended up drenching the lower half of my body and drove aimlessly around Batam trying to figure out where these boats are launched. But I was also fortunate to have worked with a great fixer in Batam and collaborate with my brilliant colleagues Rashvinjeet Singh and Amir Yusof as well as Rafael Estrada Calvar who captured the issue perfectly with his illustration.https://lnkd.in/g2wMC4Pi
