About us
PIER71™, Port Innovation Ecosystem Reimagined at BLOCK71, is a joint initiative between the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and the National University of Singapore through its entrepreneurial arm, NUS Enterprise. Our mission is to encourage Singapore's maritime industry to accelerate innovation and its adoption and venture into new growth areas through working with technology start-ups. We aim to grow a vibrant maritime entrepreneurial ecosystem which brings together the foreign and local start-ups, corporates, tech start-ups, venture capitalists and mentors. Both partners, MPA and NUS Enterprise are leveraging on each other's strengths in maritime sphere and entrepreneurial ecosystem building to lay the foundation for the birth of a dynamic maritime innovation community. PIER71™ runs a myriad of programmes to attract talents, support and accelerate technologies and start-ups, and build networks amongst corporates, venture capitalists and entrepreneurs to unearth opportunities.

Grand finalists will be putting their best foot forward and pitching to an esteemed panel of judges: Mr. Eng Dih Teo became Chief Executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore in September 2022, previously serving in various policy roles, including as Deputy Secretary (Policy) at the Ministry of Defence. An accomplished scholar and volunteer, he holds Master’s degrees from Imperial College London and Harvard. He received the Public Administration Medal (Silver) in 2021. Dr. Kah-Hin Chai is the Associate Provost for Masters’ Programmes and Lifelong Education, as well as the Vice Dean for the College of Design and Engineering’s Office of Graduate Programmes at NUS. His expertise spans energy efficiency, product & service innovation, and the maritime sector’s environmental challenges, such as GHG emissions in international shipping. Published in top journals, he serves on national committees for ISO 50001 and the SCEM Programme. Mr. Cyril Ducau is the CEO of Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS), leading its green, tech-driven growth. With over 20 years’ experience in shipping and finance, he champions EPS’s strategy, profitability, and employee well-being. Previously with Morgan Stanley, he now chairs Kenon Holdings, Cool Company, and holds multiple board roles in maritime organisations. 🌅 Banzai! BLOCK71 Nagoya is now ready to welcome start-ups! Today marks the operational opening of our first BLOCK71 Global location in Japan, graced by His Excellency Hideaki Omura, the Governor of Aichi Prefecture (first photo, third from left). This new centre will create an ecosystem highway between Japan and Southeast Asia, helping Southeast Asian ventures enter the Japanese market and enabling Japanese start-ups to scale across the region. 🌏 Professor Tan Eng Chye, National University of Singapore (NUS) President (first photo, second from left), highlighted that start-ups in #Nagoya can leverage BLOCK71’s extensive network and experience as a technology-focused ecosystem builder.
