He subsequently obtained a master's degree in economics from the London School of Economics, under Amartya Sen, and a PhD in applied economics from Stanford University, under Peter Timmer and Walter Falcon. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Minnesota and a lecturer in economics at Monash University before joining the ANU in 1980. A feature of Peter's work, from his undergraduate thesis to the present day, has been the determination to apply economic analysis to understanding the economic circumstances for the poorest people. His research has dealt extensively with the relationships between economic policy, structural transformation, technological change and poverty incidence in developing countries, including the adaptation of general equilibrium modelling to address these issues. He has published widely on the Thai and Indonesian economies, focusing especially on the determinants of poverty reduction. In addition to visiting appointments at Harvard and Yale, he has been a visiting

Values are examined through Schwartz's (1999) established model, and happiness is measured in terms of personal flourishing and both job-specific and general hedonic well-being. In two nationally representative samples, self-employed workers are found to value self-direction and stimulation in their lives to a significantly greater degree than do organizational employees, but not to differ in other types of value. Well-being differences are predicted to depend on whether or not workers supervise others, such that any well-being advantages of self-employment are expected to occur only for self-employed workers without subordinates. As predicted, job satisfaction in self-employment is found to exceed that of organizational workers primarily for those who do not supervise others. In respect of personal flourishing, self-employed workers report significantl...

The findings from the survey are based upon a ten-percent sample of British manufacturing companies employing more than 150 people. The most common practices in use are supply-chain partnering, total quality management, team-based working and integrated computerbased technology. By contrast, the least used practices in Britain are total productive maintenance, outsourcing, concurrent engineering ...

Ways to measure more structural characteristics are described and these are applied to judgements within the domain of political stimuli. An investigation is reported in which left-wing, centre and right-wing subjects made several kinds of judgements about national governments. These judgements were analysed to generate a number of measures of differentiation of structure. Results indicate that a judge's political orientation is not related to the number of dimensions he uses, but that it is related to the nature of these dimensions. The implications which this methodology and conceptual framework have for investigations of other social stimuli and for cross-national research are discussed.

Older people reported higher levels of arousal but lower levels of self-efficacy than younger ones, and no age-different was present in anxiety. Arousal level was negatively related and self-efficacy positively related to learning performance, while anxiety exerted no significant impact. Age differences in learning performance were attenuated following control for arousal and some of this attenuation remained after prior control for age-related differences in perceptual speed. It was concluded that the greater arousal of older participants impaired their performance independently of differences in perceptual speed.
