study of coins with the image of a horseman with
a spear on one side and a mirror imitation of the
obverses of the coins of Janibek Khan of the Golden
Horde (1342–1357) on the other side. Their issue was
presumably carried out in 1387–1393 in the lands
of Seversk at a coin workshop (probably located
in Trubchevsk). Although the overall picture of the
organization of coin production in the lands of Seversk
has become significantly clearer thanks to the research
during recent decades, many of its aspects still remain
insufficiently studied.

13th—17th centuries are published. One of the hoards consists of silver coins (dengas
and kopecks) minted in the 30s—40s of the 16th century. Th ese coins obviously represent
the monetary savings of a peasant family. Th e second hoard has the same dating,
but consists of copper coins (pūls). Th e small size of the hoard, which includes 21 small
copper coins, allows to consider it a lost wallet.
In the article, some other items that were found on the territory of the settlement
during archaeological research are also taken into account. Th ese are products made of
iron and non-ferrous metals, as well as numerous fragments of ceramic dishware. Th ese
fi ndings describe in detail the life of rural residents of the 16th century, apparently the
owners of coin hoards published in the article.

THE “TATAR” COUNTERMARKS ON SILVER PAYMENT INGOTS OF
NOVGORODSKY TYPE
Among the countermarks that are presented on silver payment ingots (called “grivnas”)
of Novgorod type, a group of “oriental” (Juchid, Tatar) ones is standing out. Mostly,
stamps of this group include a special sign of property (“tamga”) of Golden Horde’s
khans. Th is sign is well-known for numismatists due to Juchid coins of the second half
of 13th — 14th centuries. For today, about fi fteen grivnas (and half-grivnas) with similar
stamps are known, and they came to us from seven hoards.
Th e analysis of the topography of founded ingots with Juchid stamps let us claim
that its countermarking took place on the periphery of the Golden Horde, most likely near the frontiers with Russian principalities. Th e hoards made of ingots and silver
coins, the typology of stamps, as well as other features, allow us to date them the 60’s
of 14th century

the 15th century not only silver, but also copper coins (puls). There are two
types of Yaroslavl puls that have inscription with the name of the city. Yaroslavl
copper coins are anonymous, which makes it difficult to date.
The dating of these puls can be determined with the help of following
data: the typology of coins, their weight, specifics of the die manufacturing
technology. Finds of these coins from the archaeological excavations of ancient
Russian towns and cities are particularly important for the identification of
polytypic puls. Based on the complex of available data, the possible period
of minting of Yaroslavl puls can be determined to a period of the mid-1440s –
the second half of the 1450s.
