Borrowed from ප්‍රංශ basque, from Gascon Occitan basc, from ලතින් Vascō, Vascōnēs pl, a pre-Roman era tribe settled in the Atlantic Biscaian gulf and Pyrenean mountain region of south-western Europe, who were ancestors of the current Basque population.
