Yuletide [Dec. 30th, 2015|10:25 pm]silk_knickers
I think we're meant to be squeeing publicly about the fics we received before the author reveal, no? I've been lying down on the job, since I was at my parents' for the past week and only opened my laptop twice in that time. Sorry!I got two very different, but both very awesome, fics:I received I Will Get You Next Time, Gadget in the "Soon I Will Be Invincible" (Austin Grossman) fandom. It was awesome... totally had the feel of the book, with Doctor Impossible point-of-view (complete with unreliable narration!) and discussion of superhero/supervillain sexuality and mind-controlled penguins and kidnapping-as-a-form-of-supervillain-dating. I feel a strong urge to reread the source canon now, which is ridiculous because I read it for the first time in, like, October. But Doctor Impossible as a closeted bisexual in a love triangle is now headcanon.I also received Waiting Over Here (For Life to Begin) in the "Adventures in Babysitting" fandom. This was also great! A little darker, it was an exploration of how Sara's experience on the roof of that skyscraper affected her, growing up. I really adored this, because I am terrified of heights myself, to the point that I can't even watch scenes like this in a movie, and yet the way that Sara embraced that experience totally felt believable to me. The tone of the fic is gorgeous, and I liked the ambiguity of the ending. It is highly possible that I will be able to watch the on-the-roof scene next time I watch the movie.

Sixty-five minutes and a shootout for slashing [Jan. 22nd, 2015|10:49 pm]silk_knickers
Last summer, on the day that Pittsburgh Penguins tickets went on sale to the general public, I very deliberately made sure that I was not near a computer, because I didn't trust myself. And then I came home, and was all, "oh, I'll just see if any good seats are left." And that's how I found myself sitting last night directly on the glass, right on the goal line, at the Penguins / Blackhawks game.It was unfuckingbelievable. Like, I'm still running on the endorphins. Here in no particular order are some things about being omfgrightthere:1) You actually can't hear anything the players are saying to one another; the 2015 NHL plexiglass barriers are waaaaaay better than 1995-1999 ECAC rink barriers. You also couldn't really hear much of the public address system, for example when refs were calling fouls or when there were the little filler announcement things during TV timeouts.2) About five minutes into the game, I totally got hit right smack in the glasses with a puck that had made it between the net and the plexiglass, off of Mike Richards' stick (there's about a two inch gap through which the pucks can fall into the audience.) And I am suuuuuuuper disappointed that the dude next to me picked it up off the ground before I did; I was too startled to react in time. But it makes a good story! And me and the glasses are fine. I'm actually glad it hit the glasses instead of like an inch higher or I'd probably be bruised today.3) I definitely was on television (I DVR'ed it and will watch later; my parents did watch it and one of my coworkers said he thought he saw me). And I definitely spent a few minutes today looking at game photos on the Pens website and playing the game I like to call "Where's Baldo?" Baldo was easy to find.4) The way the puck whips around the plexiglass in the corners is craaaaaazy... so fast, and often right at eye level. I flinched. A lot. Because I'd been hit in the head with a puck.5) Patrick Kane really does have hands that good.6) Jonathan Toews does not know how to skate with his mouth closed, apparently.7) I'm now strongly 'shipping Brandon Sutter / anyone.8) It's even more infuriating-slash-scary to watch Fleury go behind the net for the puck when he really should be in front of it, when he's right there in front of you.I'm still all endorphin-ing about the whole thing. I could go on and on and on.I took a shitton of photos, because I'm that not-cool. ("A shitton" = 351, apparently. Like half are not-good, but some turned out okay.)**( Photos!!! Not recommended for slow internet connections.Collapse )**SO THAT HAPPENED. HOLY SHIT.Sorry-not-sorry for the, like, hundred photos I just posted behind the LJ cut back there. And I really wasn't kidding that I knew more about the Chicago players than about the Pens who were out there last night. I'm already going to the game on Tuesday, which will complete my collection of promotional bobbleheads this season, but apparently Crosby and Malkin are currently injured and not going to the All-Star Game this weekend, which according to my waiter at the Indian restaurant around the corner means that even if they are healthy they are required by NHL rules to miss the next game after the All-Star Game as a penalty for pulling out, or something. So I'm going to be watching random AHL call ups, I guess. From the nosebleeds, where I normally would sit when my coworker scalps me his season ticket.

It's a three day weekend. I'm actually thinking about taking it, because I worked too much during Thanksgiving and Christmas. On the other hand, I've gotten very little Actual Science accomplished in 2015 so far. At the very least I'll have to do some planning from home.Right now, I'm watching Man of Steel, which has been on my DVR since last April. Why are the latest DC superhero movies so dark? It's not a terrible movie, but there is just no joy in it, at least so far. And I'm 80% of the way through it, so I'm not very optimistic about the rest. I guess it's because I grew up with the Christopher Reeves movies.Maybe I'll go to the movies this weekend. Somehow the local AMC is still showing Interstellar and the third Hunger Games, neither of which I've seen yet. I wouldn't mind seeing Into the Woods either. Or maybe I'll just wait for them to be on cable. I'm not super into movies lately, and I should clean my apartment.Upcoming: on Wednesday next week is the Penguins / Blackhawks game where I'm right up on the glass. Expect photos. Then Friday is the first symphony performance in a month, followed by Gladys Knight on Saturday. Another hockey game the following Tuesday (to complete my collection of promotional bobbleheads) and another symphony on Friday and then the opera on Sunday. SO I'm going to be busy. So I should probably work this weekend.Man, I should've watched Les Miserables instead (also on my DVR since April, except that one I did see in the theater.) At least Les Mis is uplifting (eventually). [Okay, the LexCorp "This site has been 106... 0 days without incident" sight gag was kind of cute.] [Okay, Amy Adams' last line in the film was also kind of amazing. And Clark smiled, even. Why wasn't there more of thaaaaaat?]

So, my DVR cut Teen Wolf off with probably about fifteen to thirty seconds left to go. Peter Hale "wants what [he's] always wanted..." Which is what? I don't know, because the recording cut off right there. Answers, serious or unserious, may be entertained in the comments. I'm going to re-record it when it airs again next Monday before the new episode, but I need to know! (A hug. Peter Hale has "always wanted" a hug.)

I've been watching the weather forecasts a bit nervously for the last few days. I heard some forecasters were predicting a foot of snow or more this weekend into Monday, although most of the predictions I've found have been for half that. I'm actually hoping it does snow, because I kind of want an excuse to skip bowling. I think I might not do it next year... it isn't really that fun here. I really only talk to this one guy on my team... of the other two, one is a league organizer and so is always off selling 50/50 tickets, and the other guy just sits there and plays Candy Crush. And I know a lot of it is that I'm an introvert and it is a bigger league than I had in CT, but generally speaking the league just isn't really that friendly-feeling. Like, half the time the team we're bowling with doesn't even really talk to us or introduce themselves or anything. So I'm thinking I'll skip it next year and maybe try again the year after, assuming I'm still in Pitt after my current contract lapses. (I had also thought that the league being on a Sunday night would be more convenient for me because I would not have to rush home from work to get there in time like I did back in CT, but actually it means that I lose my entire Sunday night and end up falling behind on weekend-y things.)Speaking of snow, the Penguins and the Blackhawks just now finished playing an outdoor game in Soldier Field (Chicago) as part of the NHL's "Stadium Series." I don't know what genius thought playing outside at night in Chicago in early March was such a great idea, but the whole thing was very entertaining for probably the wrong reasons. In the first period the snow was coming down so hard that the players nearly couldn't pass the puck at all... whenever the puck moved, you could see its trail in the snow, and sometimes it would fall short of its destination. Anyway, if I knew where hockey fandom actually was besides AO3 (by which I mean, if I knew how to use tumblr) I would probably be squeeing much more about this game, which paired up the two most-highly-ficced teams. (Fun fact: despite how long they've both been in the NHL, Crosby and Toews had never before played against one another in an NHL game, due to various injuries. The more you know.) In any case, the local paper cast it as "this could be a preview of the Stanley Cup finals!" which seems a bit optimistic and premature to me, but I definitely hope that someone else eliminates the Blackhawks before it gets to that because I kind of think they're the better team. Also, I've officially now been in Pittsburgh long enough to hate Fleury (the goalie) who has a really great record on paper but is, in fact, terrible.

( Orchestra - The PlanetsCollapse ) **( The OlympicsCollapse )**It's snowing, and while that's seasonally appropriate I am so frakking over it. All winter it's been snow every second or third day, but we haven't had hardly any actual accumulation, so it's immediately turning to ice and the city can't really plow any of it either, they just put down heaps of salt and sand. I'm supposed to go to bowling tonight, but I'm not sure I'll go... which would be bad if I missed it, because I skipped the one two weeks ago and last week they didn't have one because of the superbowl. But I don't like to drive in weather, and particularly here where I'm not sooo familiar with the roads, which are hilly besides. And bridges, which may freeze before roads. Pffffft.

Apparently Uganda just recently passed the watered down version of the "Kill the Gays" bill that was so worrisome last year; the new version is just "Imprison the Gays for Life." Joy.Russia continues to be all "First they came for the Communists, and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist," except I'm not talking about Communists here. I'm about 95% sure I'm going to not watch the Olympics this year. We should just rebroadcast 1936 Berlin and be done with it.And at home, everyone is shocked (shocked, I say!) that some dude on some show called "Duck Dynasty" is racist and anti-gay. And somehow the liberals are to blame for taking away his lucrative side job; he's the victim here, obviously.SO I AM GRUMPY.And I just made a small donation to You Can Play, which is doing one of these matching-grant campaign things. It made me feel better for, like, a second.

I have strong feelings about tonight's Pens / Bruins game. **( SpoilersCollapse )**I bought a ticket to Monday's game against the Blue Jackets on ticketmaster earlier today. (I can quit any time I want.) Ticketmaster had cut the price on upper deck seats by more than half -- below what my friendly neighborhood coworker-scalper offers, even -- and also they're giving away hats.

In which I have thoughts about the new television season [Oct. 24th, 2013|12:49 am]silk_knickers
( RevolutionCollapse ) ( ArrowCollapse ) ( The Tomorrow PeopleCollapse ) **( Agents of SHIELDCollapse )**I watch too much TV. I'm about ready to go through and nix a lot of season passes. For instance: NCIS is good on reruns every once in a while, but do I really need to watch it every week? Apparently not; there's two or three episodes queued up in my DVR. Plus, with Project Get Out of the Apartment More in full swing, it's hard to keep up on these shows. The DVR is capable of recording more hours of television than there are hours in the week, which is a problem if you're a little OCD'y about "completeness."

This is perhaps a wee bit excessive. [Sep. 14th, 2013|06:28 pm]silk_knickers
So, a couple of days ago I was on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette webpage and saw a little blurb that said the Penguins were having a free-and-open-to-the-public practice and scrimmage this morning, and I thought to myself, "Hey, that might be interesting. Also, free."So, this morning I hopped on the subway (which I needn't have bothered with, really; the closest stop to the arena was one stop after the closest stop to my apartment; oops. It seems farther when I'm going past it on the bus everyday, somehow, but it is actually pretty close to where I live.) Seating was first-come, first-served and it was kind of more crowded than I expected... they asked one guy (on the Jumbotron) what brought him and his family out and he said "...it was free?" Anyway, I'll not soon again have seats that aren't in the upper deck, so:**( Penguins. Many pictures; not at all dial-up friendly.Collapse )**After, I took the subway/light-rail to Dormont to check out that used book store (ElJay's? Really?) that daharyn had recommended. They had a pretty great sci-fi section. I was only going to buy one book, but then I overheard two of the salesclerks talking about the relative merits of Sam vs Dean, and how some fans thought that Dean/Castiel was going to be canon, and also Wincest, and I had to cover my mouth to stop from laughing out loud. So I bought four books instead. D'oh.So that was my Saturday. Wheeeeeee.
