A message from Mary, for those who don't get student announces anymore To the Simon's Rock Community:It is my sad responsibility to inform the campus that Jay Embree, our colleague and friend, was found dead at his home yesterday. Jay's generous presence was a cornerstone of our campus community, and his warmth touched each person here, whether through a short chat while checking in at the dining hall or in a long talk over coffee. He made an effort to know each student, faculty, and staff member on a personal level, and he held those connections with great care. As we learn more about services, I will let you know more details about plans to honor Jay's life.For now, you may want to take time to reflect on the many ways in which the campus was elevated by Jay's presence. Free Crochet Class at WEBS!! Mary Beth Temple is giving a free crochet class at WEBS in Northampton, MA on Friday, October 2 from 10a-Noon. Blog Link. It's only an hour and a quarter away.I'm in Eastern Mass and can't make it, but it sounds like a good time. Just wanted to pass along the info to anyone else who might want to come! I never knitted/crocheted in college, but seeing everyone else doing so made me super jealous. If you're a knitter or crocheter, you HAVE to go to WEBS. It's yarn heaven. Has anyone studied abroad through Simon's Rock to Germany?I'm considering staying the full four years and going abroad next year in Germany. I'm meeting with Sue Lyon in a few days but I'm anxious in the mean time and I know there is the Rodney Christopher fund but there is very little else concerning studying abroad, especially for a full year/in Germany, on the website, so I was wondering if anyone had any information?Thanks :] Current Mood:  scared(1 llama petted | pet a llama) |

anyone know if it's possible to maybe petition to get grades changed to W's, like, waaaaay after the fact? or something? during the 2 semesters i completed at the rock i was too out-of-it and apathetic to even withdraw from classes i knew i would fail (-pretty much all of them). i've gotten my shit together at a community college, dealt with the personal problems that were getting in the way, and am applying to state schools but my gpa from the rock is so bad that when i combine it with my current, awesome gpa, i still can't really get in anywhere. another semester of equally stellar grades still won't bring it high enough to get accepted. it's frustrating. if anyone knows the answer to my question or has other suggestions i would really appreciate it.EDIT: i'm in New York, lookin' at SUNYs.(16 llamas petted | pet a llama) |

US News, blah, blah The silly US News rankings came out again. The rock was placed ninth after a bunch of institutions that have totally different missions. It is also among the most expensive on the list. Perhaps more meaningful is that it placed second for undergraduate teaching. (1 llama petted | pet a llama) |

At Simon's Rock we have a mix CD exchange (I would go further into detail but to be honest I've never participated) but I have a netbook computer which doesn't have a CD drive unfortunately so I can't make mix CD's, plus buying CDs is expensive!I'm thinking about starting a community that would be like  mixsharebut just for us Rockers.This way is less expensive (mediashare, megaupload and sendspace accounts are all free!) but not as anonymous as the real exchange.would you share one?I made one yesterday, feel free to join |

Does anyone know who to talk to to contest room charges? At the beginning of the year I painted my room in Pibly a different color. My RD told me that as long as I painted it back at the end of the year I would not get charged. At the end of the year I bought some paint to repaint it. That paint ended up not being the same shade of white but being close enough that I thought it might pass. I did two coats so that if physical plant did have to repaint it it would take them less time (they charge 50/hour).ThelongandshortofitisthatIgotcharged50/hour).The long and short of it is that I got charged 50/hour).ThelongandshortofitisthatIgotcharged400. Now, I think it's absurd that it took physical plant 8 hours to repaint a single that would have only needed one coat of paint. I don't expect to get the charge completely removed, but I would like to talk to someone about it. Do I email physical plant? Someone in the financial office? Desperately Seeking Work I just graduated from Simon's Rock and moved to Brooklyn. I'm looking for work. I thought someone here might be able to help me, with a job offer or with tips or advice. If you're also looking for work, you're certainly welcome to post here too.I graduated summa cum laude, with a high honors thesis and a 3.75. I studied creative writing and literature. I edited Glacial Erratic, wrote for the Llama Ledger, and was a senior representative to community council. I also got a few awards and studied mythology abroad. I worked as a writing tutor in the writing and tutoring center. I've also been an intern at Elsewhere Artist Collaborative, where I greeted guests, helped artists, and did other things the non-profit needed done, and worked for Lewis & Clark Research, a market research company, where I did data entry and mass mailings. I'm particularly interested in work related to books, writing, the arts, or non-profits, but I'd also enjoy office work, retail, and many other things. Message from Mary Marcy "Dear Family and Friends of Simon's Rock:Last December, I wrote you regarding the global economic situation and its effect on Bard College at Simon's Rock. In that communication, I outlined the three principles that would guide the management of budgetary decisions as we moved towards the new 2009-2010 academic year. Those basic principles were, first, we must protect the mission of the college and protect our academic core. Second, we must secure recent accomplishments in our major initiatives, including diversifying the campus, developing signature programs, establishing the Win Commons and experiencing success in admissions and enrollment. Third, we must work hard to preserve jobs, so that the people who have worked so hard to build this campus will remain a part of this community.Those principles have continued to guide us.Enrollment is strong. Unfortunately, like most colleges across the country our other revenues have taken a hit. We also have to anticipate that charitable giving will be suppressed as our supporters rebuild their portfolios. These factors affect our bottom line and we have taken action to ensure the well-being of the institution, its students and employees.As forecasts for next year's revenue and expense developed, it became clear that serious cost cutting measures would need to be taken. Without acting, the College faced a deficit in the upcoming fiscal year of approximately 900,000ona900,000 on a 900,000ona26 million annual budget. This deficit, while not institution-threatening, is substantial and requires action. It is made more problematic because over 70% of our base budget is dedicated to personnel.To balance the budget, we have made adjustments in three general areas: 1) 10-15% reductions have been made in institution-wide expenses; 2) strategic reductions have been implemented in targeted areas such as contracted services; and 3) we are trying not to fill vacant positions unless necessary. Through these measures, we have reduced the deficit by half.Unfortunately, given the nature of higher education, and with so much of the College's budget relating to personnel, elimination of some jobs became unavoidable. I have worked with my colleagues and reviewed staff positions one by one to identify those that could be assumed by others or restructured for efficiency and savings. In the end, 8 of the College's 220 jobs were eliminated, effective as of June 30, 2009. These cuts cross every department and include the administrative leadership. I am also taking a substantial pay cut.This was a painful decision. Simon's Rock is a small, tight knit community, so layoffs are deeply personal and difficult. Losing valued staff members was always a decision we hoped to avoid, but ultimately one that needed to be made in order to protect the students, the academic core and the quality of education. Unfortunately, the College is not immune from making difficult decisions spurred by the economic conditions plaguing the country and higher education.While not alone in the world of higher education, we are alone in our unique mission. As difficult as resolving this potential deficit has been, doing so is clearly in the best interests of the institution and the necessary action to secure the health of the College.Sometimes an organization's strength is judged by its response to harsh realities. We have always been innovators in education and we have always been a strong community. These traits will sustain us, and returning students and the incoming class of 2009 will find us ready to do what we do best."Mary B.
